HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

My Used Headers
I'm posting a picture of my headers. I purchased these from a well known conversion guru. I'd like to have them reproduced in stainless, other than that, they are great.

Thats a different design
That is the third type of headers I have seen. When I told a friend of mine what I was doing he mentioned a guy that could custom make a set of stainless headers. If you need the name I will get it for you. Just the words custom and stainless sound expensive when used together.

A decent header fabricator / welder is next to impossible to find these days...
Stainless no, plain steel is OK. I have a ceramic coatings shop in mind.

Coated Headers
These have been coated...did you notice the collector ends? Pretty trick, leak proof clamp seal.

SS Headers
968Gene,
You may check the Burns Stainless Header Co.
They have the largest collection of SS tubing.
This company is utilized by Nascar, NHRA and Harley Davidson Racing

Re: My Used Headers
I meant I was interested in the "fab" contact Arthropraxis referred to for the custom headers.
I did notice the flanges, Gene.
The set you posted appears well-made.
A nice set of long-tubes is long overdue!
Who made those?

I will get a name and number for the fabricator and PM it to you. I would have found out today but i was out of town picking up my new motor. Merry Christmas to me.

Re: My Used Headers
Gene,
If you want to sell them, please email me at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] with a price shipped to 45102. I'm working with Tom as well, and was planning to buy the same S&P headers and have them modified the same way.
Thanks!

If they fit nicely, you can send them to Sanderson Headers where they will make a jig based on them and make sets for all of us!

If you're going to have them reproduced, use 1 3/4" primaries and 3" collectors. Those look like 1 5/8" and will make less power. BTDT.

Re: My Used Headers
So when do we get 180 degree headers?
We have our trans in the back c5/c6 style and they have made them for those...

Re: My Used Headers
180 degree headers are only about two things
1) Money
2) Time
The first one being the most important!
Figure for a decent set of 180's the price will start in around $5k for one offs

Re: My Used Headers
Mine won't cost $5k
I'm just waiting for a shipment of j-bends to come in so I can start cutting and welding them up. The routing is complete, and I've got all the primaries down to 36" long and close enough to being equal length.
Oh yeah, I'd also add '3) Sound' to the list below.

Re: My Used Headers
I made some assumptions based on the flavor of the thread that I most likely need to clarify.
Based on Genes original start of the thread I was assuming stainless, and having someone do it one off.
Based on that I think one could have the headers repoped that was posted in a polish grade stainless for in the $1200 range. With a 10 set purchase I am guessing you could get it done for around 25% less. Mild steel coated I am guessing in the $800 range one off and enjoy a 20% discount for 10 sets or more.
ANY header is a great improvement over the stock cast manifolds. The Hooker modified are a nice solution that I would guess that you start to over run them at around 400 HP. Or at lest see some “free” horsepower with a mid length as Gene posted or a longer tube. There are plenty of people in the GM world pushing 500 HP on shorty headers.
Assuming your time is worth nothing you could build a nice set of 180’s stainless for about $1000 or so in material. Flanges, bends, collectors and TIG rod. That assumes a industrial grade of 16 gauge stainless. Polish grade add about 30% to material costs. And maybe $300 worth of spare tubing and parts if it is a track car. Sooner or later you will go off road or smack some track debris that will bend a cross tube or collector. Personally if I were ever going to build a 180 set it would end up a 360 as I would double merge them into a single center pipe. 180’s engineered and fabricated right needs little muffling.
If you are building 180’s just for the sound or coolness factor more power too you, as they defiantly add the exotic flare and sound. In an under 600 HP low RPM car I doubt if there is much benefit.
A nice set of real equal length headers on a v8 well tuned fuel injected car with nice merged Y to bring the sides together sounds awesome. The further you can move the merge back under the car the more “exotic” it sounds.
If you just want the sound, you could hook it up like Bub Rub and Lil Sis.

Most likely less than $1 for the metal and $2 worth of welding wire and gas

Good eye. They are 1.75 primaries. I purchased them from someone who moved from 3/4 to 5/8 and I understand the pay off per $ wasn't as much as first thought. (with dyno runs).
