For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

power steering pump Empty power steering pump

Post  Vorsche944 Thu Aug 20, 2009 9:26 am

ok, we have the engine in and took a test run yesterday, sweet, howevfer we have PS issues

Car 87 Turbo
LS1 2001 Corvette with 28k miles
PS pump is original Corvette with remote reservoir and PS cooler

We fired up the engine and the PS is making a moaning sound
We turned the wheels and the moaning got louder (if this was only so easy with women)
When we went to stops we blew the PS seals on the power side.

We checked and we believer we have fluid flow through the reservoir

Looking for thoughts, ideas and suggestions.

Thanks
Vorsche

Rack was working fine when the car was taken apart.
Hoses have been checked and double checked. Unless a critter got into the line while it was sitting for a year!

I was looking around for Hydroboost information and saw where you were looking at putting in an Atro Ban system back in 2006

No. I gave up the idea of power brakes and went the direction of weight savings! Laughing

I couldnt do the hydro system because I got rid of the PS system and every other option I could. So it just ended up a fiberglass 944 which is quite lite and the 993TT's do very well.

But I AM looking forward to Pauls or Robs dual MC kit!!!

As for blowing the seals... Maybe it was time. However with the system being apart that long air got in. Now add some oil and you've got a nice mixture for the ps pump to cavitate with. I've run into it changing racks. Sometimes it just has to permeate out itself. If it doesn't go away after sitting overnight, then there's a problem. Check the reservior for air bubbles in the fluid. There shouldn't be any noise after they're gone. Just my 2cts

Anybody stuck the stock pump on the Chevy motor?
It is light weight, but personally, I don't want to pay Porsche when I can pay GM when it comes time for a new one.

From PHB:

My experience is that the GM pumps and Porsche racks are mismatched from a pressure point of view. The Porsche rack requires more pressure then the typical GM pump can deliver. The pump maxes out, the relief blows off and it just starts getting hot. I went through 3 pumps and got about 6 mos. out of them before they got noisy. Switched to a new one built by Turn One that had more pressure and a re configured blow off and it's working great after more then a year. Improved feeling too. The guy who owns the place is really nice and know's whats up. There was a whole thread on this a while back.

I just got off the phone with Turn One...

I told him what I had done with shimming that spring and he said that probably caused more problems than it solved. He said that what needed to be done is to increase the pressure and decrease the flow to match up to what our systems need.

-They'll sell me a new pump for $225 (very reasonable, GM wants $325) and charge another $50 to modify it to what I need. So: $275 everything brand new.
-If I had a good used pump that didn't need rebuilding it would be $75
-Rebuilding a used pump would be another $100 (so $175 to rebuild and match to our cars)

So...I could save a few bucks if I bought a reman elsewhere or found a good used pump, but I'm pretty tempted to just say screw it and buy the brand new, 100% functional pump.

I just checked and a bracket wouldn't be too crazy to fab to mount the 944 PS pump on the LS block. The only unknown would be pulley size for it....anyone have a gander?

BTW, The Dual MC idea is a conglomeration of everyone's effort. Maybe we should apply for a group patent in case some Co. decides to jack our idea an say it's theirs ....

I have the turn 1 pump, seems to work fine. I had the BMW Hydroboost installed, and was plumbing it up, but decided to rip it out. Too big and too close to the headers and engine. I'm going with an electric boost setup, it aslo has an accummulator for power stops if the pump dies. The accummulator is tiny compared to the BMW's and fits nicely behind the driver's headlight. I'm mounting the pump to the frame under the car up by the oil filter. According the to supplier I should have no issues controlling my big blacks up front, and my 968/Turbo/S2 fronts mounted on the rears. I'll let you know the details when it is all together, and pix of course!
