HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

CAMSHAFT SETUPS...What do you have/recommend??

Post  the951racer on Thu Mar 08, 2012 12:01 pm

Hey guys,
Just as the title reads. What do you guys have/recommend for a LS1?
I think I'm going to stick with the 241 heads and get them ported and polished. I am also going with a ported LS6 intake and so I have to do a cam as well to make real power. What do ya'll think?

Too many questions here to give you a real answer--do you have to pass emissions? Will it be a daily driver or track beast?

I have a 224/224 .575/.575 @ 113 cam in mine and i'm very happy with it for all-around use. It probably won't pass emissions, but it's close. The next step up would be a 230/230 .600/.600 or so cam.

Keep in mind you'll need springs, and depending on how large you go with the cam you might also want to put some better rod bolts in the bottom end to hold it all together.

No emissions to pass and I'm not planning on tracking it. If anything I'll make a few passes with it to see what she has but, as far as road racing, prob not. Not an everyday driver.....I have my LS2 Trailblazer SS for that. Pretty much just a fun car to cruise around on nice days and take to shows etc...

I'm running a 226/230 cam with .601 lift. With ls6 intake, headers, etc I'm making 375 rwhp.

Not bad Doc. Anybody have any feedback on the BBK intakes?

Also, will the 85mm throttle body clear the hood?

You might want to consider the GM "Hot" cam. Good for 50+ hp and due to the lift and overlap is very easy on the valve train. You will need better springs, push rods and a tune, but that's it.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The next hotter cam from GM known as the "ASA" turns in some really good numbers and is easy on the valve train as well. This cam has some great reviews from road racers because it shows the greatest gains in the 3k to 7k rpm range. This would also benefit a street driven car.

What are your power goals? You can make more HP than I am, just dependant how much $$$ you want to spend. Things start to get expensive once you pass the cam, tune, ls6 intake level.

I've heard EPS makes a nice cam these days.

For me, I'll be running a TSP224R 114LSA with PAC 1218 beehives and hardened push rods on a 5.3L.

I just took delivery of an LS6 Miata. Anybody want a smoking deal on an LT1 944? Anyway I run ported heads and a cam from a company called V8Roadsters. 232/238 .559 on a 115 LSA. 850 rpm idle. Easy on the valve train. I made 386 at the wheels with a 2.5 dual into 3 inch single. Exhaust is probably giving up 15 hp but in a 2500 lb. car its not noticeable so much. Drivability is great. My drive to work is a lot of 40 to 45mph stuff and I lope it along in 4th and 5th at 1400-1500rpm with no surge or bucking. Pulls to 6500 cleanly. Nice cam.I run a 3.23 rear end as well.

Im running a Texas Speed MS4 239/242 .649"/.609" 111LSA. But have not driven or tuned the car yet. Idles decent so far, but my exhaust makes it a lot quieter than expected.

Thanks for all the input so far. I am wanting around 400-450 rwhp but, that may be a little greedy. Ha. I have started looking at the Texas Speed 228R as it was recommended by Admin. I think I'm sticking with the 241 heads and getting a good port and polish job on em instead of buying 243's. Also, I'm trying to decide between the LS6 intake or a BBK 85mm setup. Not sure if I'll run into hood clearance issues on it though.

And after all of this I'll be taking it to Baton Rouge to get it tuned by the previous owner of Thunder Racing....now Engine Power Systems. From what I hear he is a genius with LSx tuning.

Yea I plan to. But, I'm not sure how familiar he is with the conversions and how these cars behave with the different setups.

My cam is an eps cam. You're not gonna get +400rwhp with a 228 cam. TonyG made 450rwhp with his ls6 with ported heads, fast 102 manifold big throttle body, big maf, big cam etc.

It's relatively easy and cheap to make around 375-385rwhp. Anything over that is gonna coat you a lot of money. I think tony said he paid $4-5000 to go from 417 to 450rwhp.

The car itself doesn't matter, it's just the engine. The question is, do you want power under the curve or power up top?

FWIW i have talked to the guys at TSP and their "all-around" recommendation is either 224/224 or 230/230 (depending on power level). I'm really happy with my 224, very mild and well-behaved, something you can drive every day and get decent gas mileage.

I had a 224/224 cam and I didn't like it at all. Made 335rwhp with it and the motor had no top end power with it. Switched to my current eps cam and gained +40rwhp instantly.

That was back when you were having your other problems though, right docwyte?

I made 345rwhp with mine @ 5600rpms...still another ~700rpms to go! Haven't put it back on the dyno since then. This summer i'll get it on the rollers and see how it does. I believe TonyG was making 380rwhp with his 224 cam.

Nope, no problems with the motor. Made the same power with two different tunes on two different dynoed. Tony was making 387rwhp, but his cam was bigger than a 224. Rpm didn't matter with that cam, it hit 338rwhp lower in the rpm range and doesn't climb any higher

I don't know, i think you just got a crappy cam, or something else wasn't right. That just doesn't jive with what i've seen elsewhere. I think Tony's engine might be a monster but most i've seen make way more than 335 (i think stock is around 315?).

Here's tony's post:
My LS1 has the RH headers, dual 2.5" exhaust, the MTI Stealth 2 cam (ground by comp cams...which is a cam on the mild side) & valve spring/retainer package, a larger throttle body with straight shot to air cleaner, and a reprogrammed ECU. 389RWHP on 91 octane. Everything else is bone stock.

MIT Stealth2, couldn't find official link, but here's this: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
224/220 .581/.581 116LSA on the cam card

Well I guess if I can hit close to 400 to the ground....I'll be happy. And $4-5k for 40 or so HP is not for me. As far as the cam goes, something that is "driveable around town daily" with moderate midrange and moderate top end.....pretty much a well balanced cam that doesn't drop on one end or the other. Gas mileage is a plus too but, not required. It will do a New Orleans trip every once in a while and thats about 2 hrs. 45 min for me. Nothin real crazy.

Tony did it wrong.

For 4-5 grand, he could have scooped the hood and stuck a blower on top. Razz
