HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Audi 1.8t or 2.0TFSI swap?
Hi,
Has anyone looked into fitting a late model Audi/VW turbo 4cyl into the 944?
The first obvious problems are: bell housing (different to the 944 and 924/931 bolt paterns), sump (the longtitudinal Audi/VW installs have a "front" sump and the transverse have a typical FWD sump).
I know people will say, just run with an LS1, but if you don't have a 951 to start with, then you've got to upgrade the drive train and brakes to 951, before you even embark on the swap.
I've got a 932 (RHD 931) with the Carrera GT body kit, which I really like, but the old 70's Audi 2.0L turbo engine doesn't really float my boat! I'm thinking of a mid range upgrade, without going full on with the LS1.
The other thing I've wondered about is the current generation, alloy, GM 3.6L quad cam V6, that might work using the bell housing from the Corvette as used in the LS1 conversions. Quad cam might be to wide for the engine bay.
I still like th idea of a Audi 1.8t (with a Garrett GT28 turbo, making 300HP!) as the 924 series had an Audi engine in the first place - I'd just like a newer Audi engine!!
Thanks,

Re: Audi 1.8t or 2.0TFSI swap?
Assuming the 1.8t is not significantly taller than the 4cyl that is in there now, it should be doable.
I would suggest using a FWD bell-housing using an adapter for the TT; see this RWD Corrado as an example. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Watch the position of the starter though as the engine will be tilted.
Oil pan and pick: I don't see why a stock steel pan couldn't be modded to fit.
Of course, the current line up of GM V6's and V8's would give good power with no required mods. They are also, relatively, quite easy to install.

Re: Audi 1.8t or 2.0TFSI swap?
I have been researching this a ton as I have a 951 without a motor. A longitudinal trans has the starter on the motor side, however the bell housing is one piece with the diff housing so it makes it difficult to mod. The 02j trans bell housing may be modified to put the starter over there.
One hurdle you will deal with is the oil pump drive on the newer 1.8T, it is right up front, and will land on the sub frame. It at a minimum is 4.5" from the bottom of the block.
Might have to go with an older style 1.8T with the intermediate shaft driven oil pump or modify the sub frame on the 944.
