HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

cv axles breaking
Its been about 2 years exactly since my 86 turbo was implanted with an ls3. The only real issues so far are completely destroying the passenger side rear cv axle at the wheel and random overheating in 85F weather. I've always considered the 944 turbo a fall or early spring car.
Are the Lindsey racing cv axles a must with the ls or do they break down the bearings too? I'm certainly not using the vanagon type, sticking with the GKN brand.
I did order vents for the hood because on a hot day there is nowhere for high heat to go except against the firewall.

Hows your transmission mount?
I just bought a set of these.

Theyre for a vanagon though

EMPI type 2 axles on mine too. These and more careful installation fixed my troubles after going through a few axles on my conversion in the first season.

Rich, can you give some pointers on installing? Do you mean clocking the cvs?

33 spline? I usually buy them built already but taking apart cant be that hard. The splines on oem appear to be stripped through where they attach, cv spinning wheel not. lol.

Re: cv axles breaking
I was able to take the broken cv apart easily. Its just an easy c clip on the end and a puller on the center. The bearing case was crushed into tiny pieces. Now I understand from the LR product cages are oval and curved where oem are square and straight. I suppose folks are taking the 33 spline vanagon axles and buying the LR end kit for $160 per side? Honestly I only diy when I waste so much money and it dont work out whete your ride is solid. Hate that. lol.
How do you install a new cage on the spline without rupturing the thing?

They should just slide on. Your axles must be damaged or twisted. You can try and clean it up with a file if its not twisted.
I'm trying those empi axles and cvs out. They should be strong.

Thanks for the info. This was not a thing until LS hp increase but its always such a journey. I have the same ole zermatt silver Metallic ride 20 years now 86 951, 3 engines, 3 trans, 4 pairs cv's. I'll never give up on the galvanized German beast. The new cv rides smooth pretty happy with the repair. Whats interesting this time, no clicking on cv just instant broken off a major hiway as the vibration shuttered the car undriveable.

Here is my solution to the overheating problem. Got them from John @tracspec motorsports. I cant wait to grill the body shops as to who can do the install correctly and not get bondo stuck on the stainless headers. Man I hate some body shops that dont do dust control. Thats a detailing nightmare to clean after body shop dust. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Nice looking conversion, Plucky.
I dig your hood latch re-location. Hope that CV fix holds.
Those vents look perfect. I had overheating troubles initially too. Tried a few things but it was inserting louvered panels in the hood that fixed the problem.

I made sure to position them forward of the strut towers based on the diagram below. You want negative air pressure above to draw air through the radiators and out.

Re: cv axles breaking
Hi Rich, Thanks for the info. Yes that is the deal most definitely. The heat just hits the firewall and bakes everything without hood vents. Except in northeast fall winter early spring. But summer was really tough for the beast it probably weared out a lot of stuff much faster. That is a great spot to vent, though the custom header V pipes bring heat thru the stick.
