HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

HIGH HP Chromoly AXLES 85.5-up
I will build these on request and will take 7-10 days lead time. I use BRAND NEW (not reman) Type II heat-treated CV's with the Larger Diameter Balls and thicker cages along with new through-hardened 4340 Chromoly axles that are chrome plated after the heat-treat process for corrosion resistance. These have no stress-risers in the circlip machined areas of the shaft and can handle much more torque than factory axles. They will come pre-assembled with all brand-new N-butyl rubber boots and new outer CV to hub gaskets as well as CV axle grease for each CV joint......

Those look very nice... Maybe next year. I like the fact you remembered to include a shipping cost to Canada! Most of the time we're forgotten...

The "Stage 8" Locking CV bolts will work with these CV's and boot flanges as well

Very cool
these look great. Can you do a 968 set as well? How much stronger do you think these are?

Hmmm, no caps/sealed design? I hate having to deal with the grease when installing/removing these axles. Never had a greasy mess with the BMW ones I normally deal with.

Re: HIGH HP Chromoly AXLES 85.5-up
Just the axles alone are 40-50% stronger and tougher because of the 4340 Chromoly steel. Additionally the stress-riser areas are eliminated that is in the factory 944 axle design. I've seen a couple break on Non-V8 cars. There is even a few pics in a user gallery here....

To Rob, I'm not sure if end caps would fit these CV's or the outer drive flanges of the 944. There is a lip on the outer drive flanges that steps out.
And at Gene, Yes, I can build them for the 968 if I had the axle dims. I asked before if anyone knew if the 968 axle lengths were the same on passenger and driver sides. As long as the 968 CV's are 86mm PCD then they too can take a Type 2 CV upgrade.
I adjusted the shipping cost.

4340 Chromoly axles
I have a 1989 951s running 18" Hoosiers. My issue is with the breaking the cages and pitting the balls especially on the left side. On occassion I can damage an axle after less than 60 minutes of racing.
Ideally after every race weekend (about 90 minutes total run time) the axles are inspected, cleaned, repacked with new grease and rotated from left to right.
Do you have any specs on the CV axle grease? I understand that the type of grease is crtical and that during the Turbo Cup days many of the teams had developed their own formulations.
What are the diameter of the balls? How much larger are the balls compared to stock? Are they the same material?
What is the thickness of the cage? How much thicker is the cage as compared to stock and is the material the same as the stock ones?
How do these axles compare to the ones that Lindsay Racing is offering that are guaranteed for one full year of racing?
Thanks

Re: HIGH HP Chromoly AXLES 85.5-up
I don't build the CV's just the axles and they are solid, thru hardened 4340 steel. TonyG said he busted one of his GKN axles and it was HOLLOW.... I just install Type 2 CV's with .75" dia. balls (0.688 is 944/951 type 4).... I personally took apart a brand new set of Empi's and a brand new set of GKN/LOBRO type 2's and the cages are thicker and wider than the Type 4's that came out of my car. I have been trying to break them under hard left and right hand turns under full throttle and haven't busted one yet. I did a 5000 rpm drop just this morning and got bite on the hot asphault. The Chromoly "spools" and has a different feeling when launching than the stock axles, which will save the trans under severe punishment. Also I have a Billet-polyurethane mount that I designed and installed and that in itself keeps the CV's from binding and exploding. With the rubber trans mount I could push it by hand 1/2" to 5/8" side to side just hanging under the car..... As for LR, I don't know, but they cost twice as much and they don't build their CV's either.

I have a set ready to assemble. Since you're in my neck of the woods, disreguard the $40 shipping for local pic-up.

Re: HIGH HP Chromoly AXLES 85.5-up
I am still building these and always will on request. I am using EMPI TYPE-II CV's as they are the best built and equal the quality of GKN/Lobros. I've measured tolerances between 3 different manufactures (for the Type 2's)

are you able to make one that would adapt to the 930 trans stubs? I would be interested!
