HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Volvo 20vt?
Thinking of buying a 2.5 944 which needs work, not interested in the 2.5na motor so thinking of suitable swaps possible her in europe. The Volvo 5 cylinder jumps to mind, development work by Porsche, lightweight and happily give 350hp, just thinking about fit currently

There are pictures of a 5 cylinder Audi swap at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
He had to do significant fabrication work; building an accessory bracket, slave adapter and a log type manifold locating the turbo forward of the engine. Looks good and having built an urquattro 20vt track car once upon a time, I bet it sounds awesome.

Re: Volvo 20vt?
Was thinking the later 2.5 turbos rather than the 2.3 turbos, but I'm not very familiar with volvo engines so need do a little more reading. I know alot more about the Audi 5 in both 10v and 20v and turbo and none turbo, infact I 7 of these engines, one of which is in a ur, and know they will bolt straight to a 924 bell, having used a 924 bell to mount a ford T9 gearbox to a I5 so it would be wise to use one these but I'd like to sink my teeth into a volvo
Already sourced a bell housing so just a car and engine now!

Re: Volvo 20vt?
So having mulled this over I've acted on this, bought a glacier blue 1989MY 944 2.7 which needs sills, the 2.7 seems to run nice so will stick it up on eBay at some point.
Bought a 2.3 T5 from S70, plan for it is a bigger turbo on the stock manifold with a Focus ST or RS intake with a programmable fuel management system. This should hopefully get between 350 and 400 hp so will be comparable to a LS swap
As for hooking up the torque tube to the T5 I'm going to use a 960 bellhosuing and mill an adapter in work.
I'll get pictures soon

Re: Volvo 20vt?
Progress stalled on this with work commitments, however I have build the engine with steel rods now and have the bellhousing. I measured the bellhosuing bolt pattern on the CMM in work quite a few months ago and have designed the adaptor plate and have plastic templates for mock up but never managed to get it machined yet... Despite having been running a CNC mill for the past 4 months. Hopefully with some time off over christmas I'll get the 20v turbo engine swap in my audi quattro done and will get back on the porsche so keep watching. Next purchase will likely be a holset hx35 which will flow over 400hp of air for me. Opinion is still not settled on the intake manifold as I might go with a custom intake, but I like to have all the parts ready before working on cars in my garage...
On an other note, I have a ur quattro and I love the design the sills on these cars and have been thinking restoring the ones on my 944 to the same style, has anyone seen this done before?

Re: Volvo 20vt?
I have managed to get the adaptor drawn properly last night after staying up to 3am as only time I've had spare latly,

This places the engine upright and will use a Saab/GM clutch release bearing
Few more pictures of the swap and mocking up the engine postion and seeing how much space is avaible for a big turbo...

And a few parts for the build

Re: Volvo 20vt?
Are those blocks sleeved or alusil?
Do you think the 2.9 I6 Bellhousing is clocked 12 degrees also. It's factory intake looks like it would interfere with the vacuum booster if put in straight up.

Re: Volvo 20vt?
The bores are cast in iron liners, the earlier 2.3 engines like this have thicker liners is why I've chosen it
I measured the tilt from the top two holes that are level on the engine against the ones on the back.

For the intake manifold I'm planning to delete the booster and look to move to the other side as I'm in the uk and the car is right hand drive. But I'm going to make a a new plenum to remove the variable length intake

Thanks for the pic. I bet that would clear the 944 booster.

Re: Volvo 20vt?
I would like to learn more about this swap as I have a volvo engine available to do it. IF someone could make that BH adapter, I could fabricate all of the other parts needed. Intake, headers, mounts, etc. Thanks,
David Bailey
Idk if you are able to PM me or not since I'm new...Should be in the next couple days if not.
will post email when i can.

Re: Volvo 20vt?
If your Bellhousing looks like the trans interface hole in Sgoodall's pic, I have the adapter already made. You'll have to figure out the Flywheel and clutch, but that's easy.

Re: Volvo 20vt?
I'm not overly impressed with the power of my 944s 16v and I'm enthrawled by my buddy's Focus ST with a stainless system!
I also know of a 240bhp engine from a s70, 70k miles and fully complete.
Would love to know more details of this swap.
Will it clear the bonnet?
Thanks
