LS1 Timing Cover

For you guys that rebuilt your LS, did you use the GM front timing cover alignment tool or were you able to install the cover by placing the oil pan on first? That tool is seemingly hard to find and expensive from what I've heard. I haven't been able to hunt down a place that rents it either. Thoughts?

I did not use the tool. While my motor was out I put the cover on loose, fit the seal in what I thought was relaxed snugged up the cover and tapped it in. Dry as a bone going on two years.

i normally put the pan, timing cover and balancer on all at the same time. get the timing cover on with the bolts loose, get the balancer pulled on, then put the pan on, get all the bolts started, tighten the pan up first (dont forget to align the back of the pan to the block) then get the timing cover tightened down. never had leaks.

I didn't use it, just a straight edge. The gaskets are pretty forgiving; not like the BS Porsche oil pan gasket lol
