HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

VQ3537 possible?
Is it possible to drop in a VQ35HR or VQ37 from a Nissan 350/370Z or Infiniti G35\37?
I have done a ton of research on the 944 stock and some research on conversions. I think this engine would best suit my needs and wants from a 944 conversion. The LS swaps seem really torquey and with a too-short rev range for my taste. I know this engine would require a bit of customization but this is a pipe dream anyway.

Re: VQ35\37 possible?
Welcome aboard!
It would seem anything is possible if you put your mind and welder to it
The best thing you can do is research through the "advanced" search in the top banner.
Quite a few challenges have been solved and posted already. If you cannot find a solution, post the question. This forum has some of the brightest minds this side of NASA (or at least Space Mountain).
Good luck, I look forward to monitoring your progress.

Those are some nice engines! I think the first question is the dimensions of the engine, will it fit?

Originally was going to swap a VQ in but found a nice 5.3 first. Would need some hood clearance, but left and right banks will clear.
You'll need the removable bellhousing from the Auto trans and the clutch from the standard then you can hunt down the optimal 1x23 spline clutch disc.

Re: VQ35\37 possible?
I have been looking at the possibility of swapping a FWD Gen 3 VQ35HR eng from a 2019 Maxima into my 968 (with modified eng mount plates in order to install it into a RWD configuration). The highest point up at the front of that eng is at the top of the timing chain cover which is 16-3/8" from the centerline of the crankshaft to the top of the timing chain cover and using an '02-'04 Pathfinder rear sump oil pan with modified depth of 3-3/4" from centerline of crankshaft to bottom of oil pan where it sits over the 968's crossmember/steering rack area, but the eng is slightly shorter than the stock OEM 968 eng at the highest point, and is also 1" narrower at the widest point of the heads & valve covers vs an LS V8 swap. Using an Gen 2 '07-'08 350Z/G35 (or '09-'12 G37 for higher RPM power) dual throttle body intake on that eng sits extremely low (3/4" lower than the Gen 1 '03-'06 350Z/G35 intake) and will easily fit under the 968's hood as long as the timing cover top clears. These engs are incredibly cheap right now (I only paid $900 for a complete pullout with only 8300 mi on it), and are good for about 325-340 WHP (380-400 crank HP) with only headers, larger intake tubing, and UpRev ECU tuning. The 968's 6-spd transaxle gearing (except 6th gear which would be better if it were a 0.6 to 0.64 ratio...FWD Nissan Maxima 6 spds are 0.63) and strength is perfect for that Gen 3 VQ35HR eng as well, and it sounds just like an F1 race eng with a 7600 RPM redline! It would sound and perform just right in a 968!!
Keep in mind that the FWD Gen 3 VQ35HR eng (out of 2016-2020 Maxima's) is more advanced and about 1-3/4" lower in overall height (bottom of oil pan to top of timing cover) vs a Gen 2 RWD VQ35HR eng out of an '07-'08 350Z/G35, and is extremely low cost for low mileage engs compared to the older high mileage RWD Gen 2 VQ35HR engs. The older Gen 1 RWD VQ35DE eng (from '03-'06 350Z/G35's) are the same overall height as the FWD Gen 3 VQ35HR, but they don't have the higher flowing HR heads & additional exhaust valve variable timing, and it's impossible to find any low mileage versions at this time anyway!
Has anybody else considered this swap and measured for fit in the 968?
