HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

944 Turbo Steering Shaft Removal Empty 944 Turbo Steering Shaft Removal

Post  Bluemach1 Sun May 26, 2013 6:08 pm

I am in the process of removing the engine from my 944 Turbo Engine. I am kind of stumped on the steering shaft. Do I need to remove the the rack to remove the steering shaft? I am following the instructions from Clarks Garage. It makes it seem as though loosing the shaft and knocking it out is all there is to it. But no clearance with heat shield. No room to remove the rear heat shield bolt.

thoughts?

You have to at least take the steering rack mounts off of the crossmember to get the shaft off the spines.

Got it.

Taking out this turbo engine is really a bit of a chore. I am able to get an LS engine out in a day. This is taking a bit longer!

You may not need to pull the rack completely off. Just loosen the four bolts on the rack to where they are all almost out... Then slide the rack back, (toward the front of the car) pull the shaft off of the splines.

Thanks.

It is kind of misleading form the Clarks Garage instructions. It wasnt until I had loosened the rack enough to slip the steering shaft off that I realized, "hey wait a minute, I have to drop the whole cross member anyway". All that really needs to be done is remove the retaining bolt. Then, while lowering the cross member, just tap the steering shaft off.

One more thought, the instructions from CG are for a non turbo car. There a few more steps involved that you just have to figure out on the fly.

It was a bit of a pain to get that little turbo engine out. Glad its not going back in!

Agreed. I just got to this part and found this thread. That motor is jammed in there. I have pulled a lot of motors in my life, this one sucked extra.
