HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

wheels
should I start a new topic on how these wide wheels would affect the bearings? Or stock arms or anything else in the suspension?

You could, but we'd just ignore you.

hey
Seriously, i am learning the ways, and have a set of 18x9's and 18x12's beauties available for me to buy, and they would look so good on a car with these fenders. How long would they (bearings)last? Or what would I need to do, to make things last? Or are there a-arms things that would need to be re-calibrated? My car is 100% stock, apart from the engine/trans.

Re: New Wide Body kit.
holy crap!!! I'm lovin it man! it looks so good...
couple of questions:
do you see any problems with rubbing if you bump the wheels out toward the edge of the fender? i noticed that the fenders seem to slope more quickly than stock...do you think this will be a problem at all? (i doubt it, but i can't really tell how much room there will be just looking at the pictures)
how much of the rear fender did you remove to get those suckers on and to leave some space for wheel travel? do you have pictures?
I'm impressed, count me in for a set this summer, i will definitely want some of these on the car!

Re: New Wide Body kit.
Right now the rear has 3" of tire clearance, that's just about the same as our cars upward movement of the suspension. Although I would recommend you double check that your bump stops are in place. I have Given it a lot and am considering putting a small bulge in them. I have no cut my car just yet. these are just mock ups so that i can pull molds and make real parts. Once the real parts are done I will make an instructional write up in how to install and it'll be on my web site. The front fenders are going to be complete fenders. After looking at what Skywalker has gone through to get his on I just can't see myself making people have to do that much work just to install a wide fender. Plus the extra cost of the adhesive and extra body work. You will have to bond on the rear . Not much of a way around that. I hope to have everything really slick so there will not be to much prep needed for paint either.....
Oh, Gamman, I'm not worried about the bearing to much. I ran spacers on my trucks for years without any problems. And I definitely will not have any problems out back ,,,,,,It has a Camaro read end now

18x12 goodness. Of course, I am not going to pay that, but you get the idea.
I have also heard so much about the front end, with the ball joints, control arms, etc.
What size of rubber would be recommended or what size do you have in there now?

Re: New Wide Body kit.
Wider is not always better. You can get away with running the stock rim setup and proper tires. Plus, I'd rather have tires go quickly then having axles and transaxles go out quickly.

Re: New Wide Body kit.
I'm not worried about the transaxle or even axles anymore, I don't have NO STINK'N transaxle. I fixed that problem. I have 18x9" on the rear right now and can probably fit 18x14" if anyone makes them
Re: New Wide Body kit.
Your best bet is a three piece wheel then. I just find the width debate to be laughable at best. If you are doing it for looks, by all means. Don't expect the car to handle that well after the fact though.
A friend of mine has an E36 M3 that's faster than a Ferrari Enzo and is only running 18x9 in the rear.

Re: New Wide Body kit.
Hopefully my Works Meisters will be in by the end of the month. 18x12 for the rear 18x11 for the
fronts. Nitto rubber going on - pics will, naturally, be forthcoming.

This could turn into a lengthy debate.robstah wrote:Don't expect the car to handle that well after the fact though.
But...
All I have to say in the Short Version is, the 911 has been A-OK for how many years?
2 inch spacers / adapters should not be a problem as far as bearings go, and widening the track actually improves roadholding. Remember the Pontiac "Wide Track" Grand Prix?
Not starting an argument, just an observation...

Re: New Wide Body kit.
Sure, widening the car is an improvement, but running wider tires can actually make things worse.
This quote is from an engineer friend of mine who has been doing business in BMW forced induction and suspension design. He's also had a lot of prior experience in and working for race car teams and companies.
When it comes to tires, many seem to think "wider = more grip". I don't believe this to be the case. I believe that the width of the tire, the diameter of the tire, and sidewall construction affect the shape of the contact patch, and that that affects the load carrying ability on a given axis.
More important though is the heat management of a tire. especially a track tire. What a wider tire gets you is more cooling. The "grip" of the tire changes more with temperature than with anything else. Too narrow a tire, too hot of a temperature, and thus little grip. Too wide a tire, too cold a temperature, and thus too little grip. I didn't ever say you should only run narrow, I merely stated that wider isn't always better.
the general premise is that you can have too wide of a tire. There are points where a wider tire has less grip or makes the car slower.
I'm not the only engineer that has recommended putting a narrower option tire on a race car. We've been seeing more and more of that trend. Just in LMP circles, we've had LMP1 cars running the LMP2 option tire. The closed cockpit cars at lemans did this too. The bentley ran a narrower tire than the R8 (though it is essentially an R8 with a roof) and that is the only year the R8 didn't win. RCE did a two part article on tire physics a couple years into the BF tire debates.

Re: New Wide Body kit.
I would like to get this topic back on track.
I never said I was going to install 14" wheels, I just said they would fit.
I am not worried about bearings, I maintain my car very well and it'll never see any real track time,Except at the drag strip
As far as the wide body kit, if it was a bad idea, people would not have put this kind of effort or money into this. (I tell you it takes a lot of TIME AND MONEY).
Skywalker don't come over here and try to hijack my thread! just kidding.
WIDER IS BETTER, JUST LOOK AT IT COMPARED TO THE STANDARD WIDTH CAR!!!

Re: New Wide Body kit.
Do You think that would look good if I pulled the bulge all the way down onto the front valance?
Re: New Wide Body kit.
I am not sure which end is the valence. If it is between the headlights then a slit like the corvette Z06/ZR1 would look good and be functional.

Re: New Wide Body kit.
In all honesty, That is very close to what I had in mind. I was just thinking something a little wider like the new Camaro
