HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

There is a guy in Europe that seems to have them for sale. I talked to him a couple of months ago.
Here is his contact information.

Chuck, from my research, back in the day, the 0.64 5th gear was Europe only. If you could find one of those that may be even better!

Re: 5th gear options, Audi?
I picked up a set of 0.64 gears from Martin back in April. I contacted him through Facebook, he's in Lithuania and was able to source the Audi gears locally.
I believe that is the same person mentioned previously. I can put you in touch with him if that helps, good guy to work with. I haven't yet installed mine, too many other projects on the list.
Be aware that when you shift from 4th to 5th, the drop in RPM is pretty significant. I don't think the drop would be as bad with the LS as it would with some other engine options due to the flatness of the torque curve, however it's still something to consider.
Here is the stock 0.83 for comparison.

Re: 5th gear options, Audi?
Great point 87944 turbo. For me, out here in CA, I love dropping the trans into 5th and spending the next 4 - 5 hours cruising, passing, not passing, whatever I want, without shifting on the open road. Low revs, high torque, low noise/low rattles, high mpg.
For me, my biggest surprise and a major enjoyment, is how many hours I can cruise on the open road so comfortably and then seamlessly transition to the mountain twisties and slice and dice like a pro.
OK maybe not like a PRO, but you know what I mean. :-)
If your goal is a track or street racing machine, where 5th gear is not a cruising gear, you probably do not want to have a high speed, low rev, 5th gear.

Re: 5th gear options, Audi?
Andy it's great to hear about your real world experience. I still track my car, so that has been in the back of my mind. But realistically there aren't that many tracks, at least around me anyway, where I would get into 5th anyway, so I should just go ahead and swap it. The stock 0.83 just feels wrong at highway speeds.
My perfect trans would probably have the stock 1 through 5 and a 6th gear with a 0.6x ratio. Would be the best of both worlds!

Re: 5th gear options, Audi?
Did a nice trip over the weekend up to wine country. God I love that car!
Honestly, I think the 0.64 European gear would be best for spending hours cruising the highway.
fwiw, my engine came out of a 2002 Camaro, and the google says those cars cruise at 2000 rpm at 70 mph.
