HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

So we have been member of PCA (Chicago Region) for decades now. We thought it would be cool to build a 948 track only car to use. After doing a lot of reading and research I've decided to start looking for possible v8 swap candidates.

Here a a couple:

Anyone have any opinions on these?
Is there anything in particular I should look for in the donor car?

thanks!

I think you should start with a turbo car. You could find one with a blown engine for pretty cheap. Much stronger tranny, and better brakes. Depends on how much work you're going to do to the car though.

That is what I did. I have an 88 NA, but decided it was worth the cost in braking, trans, and susp upgrades to get a turbo body. Sure, the brakes and susp will probably get upgraded in the long run, but this should get me by for a while so I can defer that cost until I am actually up and running.

The thing is though that it will be getting upgraded brakes, and new suspension. So the only reason I would want a turbo would be for the transmission?

We were also thinking of swapping in the transmission for a 968 6-speed unit.

A turbo trans alone can cost what a roller 951 does. I would look into that 6 speed swap to make sure the gearing works with the V8, I think I have read on here that it isn't ideal, but don't take that as gospel- get it from someone who knows. If you are going to do a complete ground up build, maybe it doesn't matter as much.

The six speed is not a good option for a v8. The 951 trans is really the only one suited for the task.

As for what to look for, i would look for one with good paint. The two you listed are pretty overpriced for what they are. They all say "recent clutch", etc. You don't care about that! Find one that has a nice body and good paint, no wrecks, etc.
If you're going to paint it anyways, then just find one sitting in a field somewhere. You'll probably pay a few hundred bucks for it and they'll be glad to get rid of it.

On the other hand, if you buy a turbo car, you'll already be ahead on the trans and the body style, and you'll easily be able to sell all the stuff from the motor and the suspension. You'd probably break even!
