HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 5:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Auto to Manual conversion
I have an 84' auto 944 and swaping out the auto for a manual trans. I've never owned a Porsche so I am in unchartered territory. The pedals area is taken care of as well as the shifter assembly rod, short rod assembly that mounts to the transaxle, and the trans manual trans mount.
With the chevy v-8 conversion is it necessary to get a limited slip? i would really like the limited slip but can I get away with just the open diff?
I was told that with this trans swap I would need to change the half-shafts. Will I? If yes, why would it be necessary?
No trans or chevy v-8 purchased yet any suggestions appreciated.
thanks, tehone

Re: Auto to Manual conversion
No, you do not need LSD. Its nice, but not at all required.

Auto to Manual conversion
If the LSD is not a have to item am I held to certian transaxles that will favor the 1984 944? Is there a transaxle that is more prefered over other years? Are there some that I should stay away from?
Does the LSD make the car with the V-8 conversion a handfull (squierlly) to handle over the open diff? Or is it a price issue that one can live without and still be satisfied?
I am after the 5-spd trans.

Re: Auto to Manual conversion
Did someone tell you that you had to have LSD for the v8 conversion? Any transmission will work. Some prefer the turbo boxes and others prefer the NA boxes. The popular setup is a turbo transmission with a NA 5th gear.
Try a search on "5th gear swap" and check out the threads on the intermediate reinforcement plates.

Re: Auto to Manual conversion
the 5th gear swap is super simple and straight forward, if you go that route. It looks like a turbo box with the na 5th gear, according to online rpm calculators, will be the best setup for the v8 car.
As far as a lsd, if would be a awesome addition to a project so you can get good grip with both tires at the same time and it distributes the torque load across both cv axles better. But for most of us we cant find or afford a lsd still trans so a regular one works as good.
It really depends on the type of driving you are doing. Autocross would probably be better without lsd, straight line highway driving would be good with lsd,
