For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

1985 vs 1985.5

As I understand it the main mechanical difference between the 1985 and 1985.5 is the control arm and the transmission mounts. I'm debating between a running 1984 (80,000 miles and only problem is the ignition) and a 1987 that needs a bit of tlc (engine runs rough, low oil, 120,000 miles). He wants $1000 for the 1984 or $800 for the '87. Is changing the arms worth the hassle? Is it a hassle? Would I even keep the stock control arms if I'm going to do a track car anyway?

If you are building a track car, most likely you will be redoing alot of stuff in the end. I would get the 87 for the fact it is cheaper and it has the suspension setup there, no changing anything at first.
Once you swap into the v8 the old engine problems mean nothing because you are running a new harness and the only thing that would affect it would be the fuel filter and fuel pump.
Does your body have to be perfect for a track car?
Your call in the end though.

My only qualms with buying a car with a bad engine is I can't resell the engine. A 80,000 mile 944 engine in complete working condition could get a bit of cash, along with the tranny if I decide to swap it to a stronger turbo tranny. A 120,000 mile, barely running engine doesn't do me a whole lot of good.

I see where you are going, but you also have to look at who is buying? either way you go with it its a risk. If you sell the eninge and tranny, you might be able to buy a turbo trans and have a few bucks left.
