HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

944 Turbo Open Diff Trans Strength
Hey guys title pretty much says it. I was wondering how strong are the 951 open diff transmissions? I am running a cammed 5.3 motor and just curious if I would break it under any hard launches or full acceleration from 0mph. I use to own 2 turbo cars and never had an issue but I had an 86 Lsd trans and 380hp. I don't clutch dump or anything but getting an idea if the trans will hold power well. I drive responsibly but enjoy a sprint 0-60 once in a while. Thanks for your assistance.

I could not imagine an open diff car with a V8 conversion. I have a 968 with open diff and it is a pain with just standard HP. I would say the regular turbo cars probably don't have the cooler either but I guess if your car is just a cruiser it should do.

I ran my 5.7 with a 5P, '87 n/a trans with an open diff, on track for a few years with no trouble. The fluid that came out when I changed it looked good. I always avoided shock loads, no hard launches or power shifts, but spun a wheel in 2nd and 3rd gears a lot. Which is why I eventually changed the trans to one with an LSD. YMMV

Re: 944 Turbo Open Diff Trans Strength
The 951 turbo trans is pretty strong. Almost all of the 944 Ls cars we have built have the 951 trans. The only real issue with the open diff, is that it will spin one tire very easy under hard acceleration. The LS has way more torque down low than the turbo engines do. As far as hard launches, don't dump the clutch and don't let it wheel hop. Both will grenade the trans. Get the car rolling and then mat the throttle.
