HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Need measurement on an installed LS1
I'm working on engine placement and am interested in the measurement that exists between the back edge of the drivers side head, to the firewall.
Mine is exactly 1" from the top rear driver's side corner of the head, to the firewall, when I put a ruler across the open exhaust ports.
I think this is about right, but I would like a comparison to other folks that are HAPPY about where their engine is before I weld/drill/tap some stuff and begin test fitting the modded hooker 2312.

That's a tough spot to get to, with a M/C installed! Also, the "bowl" that the M/C bolts to protrudes further than the firewall.
With that in mind, i have the RH kit and there is 5/8" between the tip of the cylinder head and the brake m/c bowl.

Mine's 1" exactly as well, measured from the same location.

And...
The bottom of the cereal bowl is ~2.5" high (or deep, depends on how you see it). I've seen 3/4 - 1.0"+ on the LTs. The further back, the better, as this directly relates to corner weights and handling. Anything less than .25" will probably cause some noise...

With the 1/4" Plate of the Tilton Dual MC setup, I have exactly 3/8" between rear driver's head and plate face.....

Re: Need measurement on an installed LS1
Mine actually interfered with the cereal bowl by about 3/8". I had to notch the bowl and then weld the piece I cut out back in the opposite way for strength. With my customized cereal bowl, I now have a minimum of 3/4" clearance at the bowl. As for the firewall, I have about 1" at the top of the Driver's side head. That is an approximation, but I know this from fitteling with my slave hydraulics (pressure and bleed lines) which run through that area.
Has any one else had to notch their cereal bowl? My firewall must have been factory welded and/or stamped a little out of spec (I am positive it has not been wrecked) because I have also had similar issues with the steering shaft being too short and the clutch pedal having too short of a stroke.

I think so, BUT...Bridar wrote:Has any one else had to notch their cereal bowl?
We're eliminating the cereal bowl, installing a 1/4" plate and custom pushrod to use the Wilwood 260-7563 master cylinder. No clearance issues, and improved braking.
I know, wrong thread...but it does help with clearance...

Or maybe you need to stop doing the leg press so much

Are you talking about the clutch not fully disengaging at times?
I've been suspecting that the stock 944 M/C is just a little shy on the volume side....

Picture please
How about a photograph of an installation where the "cereal bowl" is notched.
I have to assume that this keeps the stock brake master cylinder and vacuum booster.

It takes a lot of bleeding to get every last bit of air out of the system, and you're right--i do think the stock MC is on the small side. When mine goes out i'll probably get a nice CNC (brand) one.xschop wrote:""""and the clutch pedal having too short of a stroke.""""

Nope.fliermike45 wrote:...I have to assume that this keeps the stock brake master cylinder and vacuum booster.
Booster must be removed regardless of hydraulic system.
The best options IMO are the Tilton dual MC balance bar or the Hydroboost.
A "cost-conscience" Wilwood manual master cylinder (with a plate to replace the cereal bowl completely, and a custom length pushrod) is a third option...

Re: Need measurement on an installed LS1
I don't think that you should place your engine based on its proximity to the firewall; if you had a trans mounted directly to the engine you could place it anywhere.
With the stock rear mounted transaxle set-up the engines final resting place is determined by its relative position to the transaxle mounting point, unless you plan to move the mount.
I have over an inch of space.

Re: Need measurement on an installed LS1
Overall it sounds like ~1" is a fairly common distance, which tells me my overall engine placement isn't far off from what others are seeing in their conversions. Thanks everyone for the feedback. This gives me the confidence to tighten everything down and start lacing things up.
Good sanity check.
