HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

928 transaxle
Just thinking out loud here, but has anyone ever considered or actually done a 928 5 speed transaxle in a 944 conversion? Seems they are strong with proper gearing, and although larger, they lack the "bellhousing" portion, so overall it would likely fit. Am I missing something here?

Re: 928 transaxle
It will actually fit nicely in a 944, the output flanges are 930 CV's so an adapter is needed. The gears are very strong and CORRECT for a V8. The earlier boxes up to 86 have a clunkier 1st to 2nd gear shift, but a new synchro fixes that issue.

So what's the downside? Just the adapters? If I recall, you've built those adapters, right?

Re: 928 transaxle
The biggest practical downside seems to be that new parts for the various iterations of of the manual 928 transaxle, and even good used 928 manual transmission parts are becoming very hard to find. There has even been some discussion on the 928 forums on renslist on how transmission part availability may become the limiting factor on keeping an "original" 928 with a manual transmission on the road.psnyc wrote:So what's the downside? One more data point is that a few 928 owners are actually starting to swap over to the C5 transaxle while keeping the Porsche engine to keep their cars on the road.

Re: 928 transaxle
um...I have a good 79 928 5 speed... What are these things worth?? Seeing it sitting under the bench is what made me think of swapping it in the LS1944.

Re: 928 transaxle
Not sure exactly. I have thought about putting a spare on the shelf (for my 928 swap) but if my 5 speed goes out I'll probably just break down and do a transaxle c5 swap.
