HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Hi guys,

I'm finishing up rewiring my car and can't remember where I'd connected the main battery ground cable. What's a good place?

Thanks in advance,
Dan

Assuming you have a 944, mine goes to the original bung welded inside the battery compartment. Looking from the RH side of the car, it is located in the far right corner, I then run a short cable form the same bung to the RH cylinder head.

Ok, that's helpful. I'd had mine connected somewhere close to the passenger cyl head before, but I'd forgotten where.

Thanks a bunch.

Mine is done like pormgb describes. Here's a pic, you can almost see the attachment point in the lower right of the pic.

Ok, thanks Rich.

When I originally wired the car a few years ago, I used the stock negative to body ground (in the battery compartment as pormgb describes). It's the battery to engine ground that I can't seem to find a good place to connect.

BTW, I'm close to getting the car ready and plan on doing some track days with it this spring/summer. It's been 2 seasons out of action, and I'm optimistic this year I'll have some time to run the car.

Again, thanks.

Hey Dan. I put mine to a boss on the block just above the starter. Seemed like it should be a good spot but I have had some electrical intermittence of my starter. In my current project I'm up-ing the size of the battery positive to starter cable from 4 gauge to 0.

Hi Rich,

That may have been where I'd connected it previously, but I just can't recall. Knock wood I didn't have issues with the starter in the past. I did initially have issues with the battery overcharging, but that was due to the funky GTO specific starter wiring that I'd done wrong the first time. I like your small battery + ABS unit combination. That's a great use of space and looks convenient to the brake lines.

Will report back to let you know how it runs once I'm done.

I'm a bit stalled out, trying to figure out the best way to locate a transmission cooler. I had been running the turbo loop cooler, but have decided to change to a finned row cooler, with tapped AN fittings on the transmission. I may cut out the spare tire well and locate it there...it seems like a popular spot.

Thanks all...
Dan.

I relocated my battery to behind the rear seat.
I ground a clean spot and attached the negative cable to a thicker portion of the floor pan.
I'm getting juice now, but is it gonna be a headache later?
Should I run a car back up front the original attachment point?

I don't know if the chassis will be good enough.

I fixed my issues by grounding the ABS separate from the battery and by getting a new starter. The solenoid had gone bad due to heat from the long-tube headers. One year and one week, of course, so no warranty...

Rich- does that mean that you are using a GM starter solenoid instead of the original Porsche solenoid?
I'm just starting to work through the starter wiring-

Yes, using a factory Chevy truck starter with the 2 long bolts. Has a built-in solenoid.

Ok, this is likely to be a really dumb question, but I'm using a 02 Camaro starter.
Does that automatically mean it has a built in solenoid,
or did you specifically purchase one with that came with with that option?

all oem and oe replacement chevy starters have a solenoid built into the starter, thats why you connect 2 wires to them.

Duh. Got it. Thanks!
And the two wires were which ones/from where?
I know this has been discussed ALOT but I haven't been able to cull a concise answer from all the info/posts, nor from the "manual" on which I way is the best. Seems like there is some disagreement.
I've got everything sorted except for wiring the starter, alternator, and fuel pump.
