HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Tire choice
I have just picked up some Borbet replica Cup 1 wheels for my project.
I would welcome any suggestions on tire choice for the fronts 17x7 and rears 17x9.
Would like tires that will benefit the car without paying exhorbitant prices. Some of the foreign brand names out there are new to me....any ideas?
FYI the front struts have Koni inserts, uprated springs, boxster rotors and lexus calipers. LS1 motor.

Not yet. More interested in brands rather than ultimate size.

What kind of tire are you looking for? All season, Summer Performance, etc...

As I live in Mid Florida I think Summer Performance would be appropriate.

Re: Tire choice
I live in Daytona Beach. With all the rain and pretty smooth roads I use the GoodYear F1. The wet grip is scary. As in, if this thing lets go now we're all in trouble! I have 265/35-18 rears with no fender mods on 18x9 turbo twists. Pretty decent drive grip once you get to second gear.

Brands dont matter.
UTQG rating does. Basically it is the "stick" level and wear level all rolled into one. The lower, the more like kleenex they are. Stick, and wear out fast.
When people (more SUV drivers) bitch about a 300 UTQG rating tire wear out faster than their old 400-600 UTQG rating, its like saying my 180hp car isn't as fast as your 300hp car. People just don't get it. There are even class actions. It's crazy. What is funny, is there are 300utqg suv tires.
You want to tell tire rack sales rep what type of driving you are doing, and they will come up with a tire.
Personally, I do track days, and the 200UTQG tires are hard to beat. They handle the track, and water, and daily driving (summer only).
Things like the Dunlop Star Spec and new bridgestone re11 are tough to beat. I liked the Khumo XS because it was the ultimate summer grip, but its scarier in the wet, which didn't bother me. There are a couple of others, but they written up on tire rack.
Do you mind if they wear out in 15-20k miles? IF so, then go to 300 rating.

Re: Tire choice
I believe wear, traction, and heat ranges are all determined by the manufacturer (there is no standard), so research is your best friend.
I'm not the most knowledgable about tires, but most auto-cross and road-race forums have a ton of posts on which tire is the best. In the end it comes down to a few...
I personally just bought some Hankook Ventus V12 Evo's, they're brand new on the market. They're a "high performance street tire"--something you could autocross on a fair amount, but also drive through a rainy day without killing yourself. That's what i wanted... The Maxxis MA-Z1's are also new on the market and have some good reviews, but in the end they didn't have the size i wanted. Maxxis is very well-known for tires in lots of other sports, but they're new to the road. I paid ~$200/each for 285/35/18's Hankooks, which is about half as much as some of the other tires in that category.
Have heard good things about the Yok Prada Spec2, Falken RT615, and Bridgestone RE-11 as well.

Oops
Oops,
Falken RT615
Could be the winner in the bang for the $ sweepstakes of best of grip with track and rain/daily driver ability. Forgot about that one.
They aren't the fastest, but if you want to go out and learn, spend your money on classes, as your brain will be the slowest thing in the car. By the time your brain has caught up, these tires will be used up (took me 5 years and maybe 4-5k miles of racing - my brain is a little thicker than most).

Tire Choice
Thanks guys, I decided to go with the Falken RT615. Seems like a good all round tire for what I want for a road car. Bonus is a cash back deal if you buy 4.
Thanks again for all of your inputs.

Tire pressures
Have installed my 17" cup one wheels with 40 profile tires.
Any suggestions on tire pressures (still have stock 4 cylinder motor), thanks.

Front track
The car is finished and I'm driving almost daily checking things out.
Before I installed the LS1, I installed 7" cup1 wheels on the front and noticed an immediate change in the steering sensitivity. It changed a nice handling car into a twitchy rollerskate.
Now the LS1 swap is complete the car is still exhibiting the same tendencies.
After rebuiding the front struts and uprating the brakes I had the alignment done to the factory specs.
I also used Xschops bump steer blocks to correct for the dropped cross member.
Can anyone suggest a different toe setting with the wider tires, 225-45 17" ?

Re: Tire choice
Drag radials are working well for me. I autocross my car, and perform remarkable well - even on wet courses. I am running Nitto's NT555R while waiting for the NT01 to come out in the size I want. Prices are determined by when you buy - especially performance tires. As competition season ramps up, the high-performance rubber gets more expensive (not to mention the price of oil) adversely affect the prices of tires.

Mike - I am running slightly toe out - maybe an eighth of an inch. I want to up my springs a bit and probably change the alignment slightly when I'm done.

Re: Tire choice
For what it's worth save up and buy the new Mich Pilot SS...... Extremely Satisfied!!!!! So much better than their PS-2 and by the way, CHEAPER than them too. Just ran One Lap of America this year for the first time and several Club days at VIR just playing around and they don't look hurt at all. Even did a PCA Auto Cross (in a non-Porsche class of course) and they look like they go on forever. Going to put these in climate controlled storage for next year's One Lap they are that good. The best part is they stick like no other tread tire I've seen. Pulled over 1.015 g's on the dry skid pad on the last event this year...... Good enough for 11th overall, not too bad for someone just out to have a good time on my first One Lap experience.
Re: Tire choice
I'm late on this thread, but thought I'd share for future reference:
1986 951
Front:
255/40R17 Kumho Exsta XS (180 tread wear, really gripping ) I really like these tires, but like others have said, they're a bit slippery in the wet
ZR1 17x9.5, 56mm offset, 5x120.65 bolt patter, 21mm spacers/pattern conversion, 35mm final offset
Rear:
295/35R17 Kumho Exsta XS
ZR1 17x11, 50mm offset, 5x120.65 bolt pattern, 25mm spacers/pattern conversion, 25mm final offset
Cheers,
Luke
