HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Sunroof Delete
OK, so we discussed on the forum fiberglass racing panels, making metal panels and bonding them in (I have seen on other sites where people have welded panels in) but has anyone done a full replacement of the roof using a true factory sunroof delete roof? I think that this might be more pain than it is ultimately worth but I would still like to explore this.
I would like to consider this because the sunroof just bugs me. Ultimately, I think it would make the cabin feel a little bigger. I have no way of knowing because Ihave never seen a factory sunroof delete car...
Open for discussion?

Re: Sunroof Delete
ALOT of 924's did not have sunroofs. could find one of those likely easier than a 944 delete. as far as putting it on a 44, use gm bond. its an epoxy gm uses to put metal panels together with. no welding, no warpage.

I am not sure that just epoxy bonding would work for what I am talking about. My thought is to replace the whole roof panel from the front pillars to the rear hatch.
Re: Sunroof Delete
It's just a matter of money!
I have a 1984 non sunroof car that I use for mock up. How bad do you want a roof?

Well, for now, its just a discussion of feasability and complexity. Looking at the PET catalog, pretty straight forward? [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Re: Sunroof Delete
Someone has a non-sunroof section for sale on the bay for $250 (not me).
Key words: Porsche 944 951 Rare Sunroof Delete ROOF
I have to get down to the local Pick n Pull and get a good look at how this is all put together. I imagine a bunch of spot welds to be drilled out and then just weld the new section in? Over simplified??

Re: Sunroof Delete
I made up a steel filler panel and bonded it with 3M 08115 Automix adhesive.

Re: Sunroof Delete
What would be the benefit of this? Is there some aerodynamic issue that a sunroof is causing? Seems if you left if down there would really be no issues.

Well, if you're tall, it makes for some extra clearance when you wear a helmet, lighter for a race car, or if you are building a cool 924GTS replica with a V8, you don't want no stinking sunroof!

Re: Sunroof Delete
There are a couple reasons. First, the sunroof panel and mechanism weigh 26 pounds and my steel panel weighs 6 pounds. That's a 20 pound savings. And second, I don't like the sunroof anyway.

Re: Sunroof Delete
For those of us looking for a street car but considering losing the sunroof, what do we do about the underside of it after we use the drop in panel/remove the gears? Is there something to fill the hole left on the inside of the car as well?

There is one thing I just don't understand. My intention with this comment is NOT to start any argument, so PLEASE just read the comment and understand this is just my comment and nothing more!
I don't understand why people want to tell someone that their ideal for THEIR car is stupid. This forum is not to bad but I go on to another forum for solely the 944 and those guys have a real malfunction.
I love the car hobby because we all like different things and that makes for a great mix of eclectic things we do. Just because I like one thing doesn't make it right. It just is my ideal of what I like. The one thing I love is to read about everyone's projects and I get enjoyment of the guys that are doing their own labor. So everyone that is doing their own thing two thumbs up and much luv. Keep up the great work!!!!

Re: Sunroof Delete
I missed this. I glued 1" foam to the underside, then over that I glues 1/8" foam to cover the whole area.

Then I glued headliner material over that.

It turned out very nice. But it is difficult to get a good picture of it with everything being black.
