HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

That would be an interesting setup.

6,900 at 210 probably need about 800BHP

Re: 5th gear options, Audi?
Hey Acorad, did you ever locate the 0.64 gearset?
I signed on the Audi forums to put a feeler out. I would like to be at 2200-2400 RPM on the freeway at 70

No. The 0.64 was Europe only, afaik.xschop wrote:Hey Acorad, did you ever locate the 0.64 gearset?

The 0.68 calculates out to about 2450 RPM at 75 mph for my setup, the 0.64 would be about 2300 RPM at 75 mph.
Let me know if you find the 0.64, I'd be interested in one too.
Were you the one who swapped out your 5th gear through the fender well? Love to hear a little more about that!

Re: 5th gear options, Audi?
No, I swapped mine when I took out the NA and stuck in the 951 trans. But if you chop out the wheel well, the swap can be done without removing the trans. My sub wouldn't sound too great if I chopped out the bottom part of the sub-box.
I have 285-30-18 rear tires and am not sure If I can get 295-35-18 under there without rubbing the fenders. So I may get 285-35-18. I think 285-40-18 would be too big of a jump

top speeds in 4th gear
So Ive been searching around here & I cant find any info on tops speeds per each gear. I thinking of doing a .73 5th gear swap into my 951 trans. low cruising RPM is important to me but I also know I dont want to top out in 4th at like 120mph and then shift into a too tall of a 5th gear and the engine comes down out of it power band. So heres my question: whats the top speed of the 951 trans in 4th gear with a 285/30/18-ish tire?
(ive already seen & read about the speeds in 5th that were posted)
Thanks,
Bryan

PM me with your e-mail address and I can forward you an Excel file that will give you speeds for each gear and tire diameter. It is set up so you input the gear tooth counts, R & P tooth count and tire size and engine RPM's. Then it makes a graph for each gear.

Pretty cool calculator, mine shows just about 215MPH at 7000RPM with the NA 5th gear in my turbo transaxle!

Other site
The Kabamus site gave the 5th gear speed at 5000 as 161.54 mph.

Anybody got any further news about the Audi gearsets? Also is the N/A 5th gear swap still give you plenty of "around town torque"?

951, I'll be doing the 5th gear swap from the Audi diesel soon. I'll post up my results.

Re: 5th gear options, Audi?
Sounds good. Where did you end up getting it from and what ended up being the cost of it? I know there were several numbers posted earlier in the thread. Just wondering in case I decide to do this instead of the N/A 5th.

951, it was either All Auto Recycling (719) 683-9600 or Jerry's Foriegn (408) 993-9711, both up in the NW somewhere. I believe the trans was 125 + about 75 for shipping.

Re: 5th gear options, Audi?
Punched in the numbers between the stock 0.83 5th gear and the NA 0.73 5th gear and it looks like the NA gear drops rpm by 400-500 rpm at the same cruising speeds.
At 3000 rpm with 285-30-18 tires with the 0.83 gear you're going 78.8mph, with the NA 0.73 you're going 89.6mph, which you don't really hit till you're at 3500 rpm with the 0.83.
With the diesel 0.68 5th gear you're going 96.18 mph at 3000 rpm, which is pretty much a 600-700 rpm drop over the stock 0.83 ratio.
I have easy access to the NA 5th gear because none of the Spec 944 racers want it, so I think I'm going to swap it in and see what I think. They all want my stock 0.83 5th, but I'm going to hang onto it in case I don't like the bigger hole between 4th and 5th the NA gear will create.

Re: 5th gear options, Audi?
Ya, I agree. The 0.68 drops your rpms about 200 more than the 0.73. I'm going to hold on to my 951 0.83 also.
I'm going to hold on to the rest of my diesel trans with the idea that if the 951 trans I have now ever frags, maybe I can swap in the rest of the diesel gears. The diesel 1st gear is the same as the 951 (3.60), but all the rest are progressively taller.
Probably could just swap in the whole diesel trans if I put some thought into it...

Gear ratio
Not been on Interstate yet, my 88 NA with a Turbo trans and NA 5th gear was showing 2500 rpm at 60 mph. Tires are 255-40 17"

My Audi Diesel 0.68 5th is in and it fits and apparently works fine, although the trans is still out as I'm still in process of clutch, TT bearing, etc., etc...
