For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

starter hook up
I started to hook up my starter on the LS1 motor. I have the power wire going to it, where does it get the relay wire? I am thinking it is the wire off of the ignition switch that activates when the key is turned to start, am I right?
I need to figure this one out.

Re: starter hook up
The big red wire with the black stripe on the fire wall goes directly to the starter Solenoid.
Re: starter hook up
I will look for that then. Where is it coming out of, the driver side or the passenger side on a 86 model?

Re: starter hook up
It comes out of the driver side, IIRC there's a bundle of three big gauge wires that come out near the brake m/c.

ok, I just want to make sure, this car is setup differently than the 85 early.
is it this one, its the only red with black stripe coming from that bundle? if so what is the other wire tied to the same connector for?

Re: starter hook up
second wire goes to the alternator for the light in the dash, You can wire it to the alt, or just take the alternator wire and install a resistor in it back to the pos lug on the alternator. I wired it to the light.

Re: starter hook up
does the light it hook to, just let me know if the alternator goes out or something?
Just to confirm then, this is the right red/black wire for the starter solenoid?
Thanks

I think so.
Put a volt meter on it and turn the key... what happens?

Re: starter hook up
The dash light acts as a primer or trip/trigger to turn the alternator field on and allow charging. When you start a car, you usually see the dash light pop on for a brief moment and then go out. This brief moment causes a small voltage drop which triggers the alternator.
You can use a 470 ohm resistor if you prefer.
