HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Hello! Everyone! I'm also doing an LS swap in my Porsche I know I have to get spacers for my crossmember and have heard I need spacers for suspension as well I was wondering if anyone on here knows the dimensions of the spacer so I can make them myself? That would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You can make them yourself. I made some out of 1/4" aluminum.

No, I got a piece longer and wider than both of the holes and drilled two holes that would fit the bolts. Once you get the crossmember off you will know what to do.

There is one thing to be careful of when using aluminum to make spacers. If both the chassis and bolts are steel, when aluminum is used for the spacer and it isn't fully painted, powder coated or anodized (inside and out), if water gets between the raw aluminum and any steel, you could end up with some very serious corrosion. The aluminum / steel interface acts like a battery, and water will really accelerate the process.

I ran into this on a time attack car (an Evo). The owner had made some aluminum spacers to push the steel OE sub-frame stiffeners down about 1" to clear a large exhaust. After they had been on the car for about two years the OE bolts had corroded almost completely through, a couple broke off with only light pressure from a ratchet, and the OE threads into the front sub-frame were shot. The whole mess came apart in a shower of white aluminum corrosion after I managed to break everything loose. The OE sub-frame needed to be drilled and re-tapped with larger threads, the OE bolts had to be replaced with a larger size, and the sub-frame braces had to be drilled slightly to fit the new bolts. When the car was put back together we replaced the aluminum spacers with painted steel.

The repair process was a lot of unnecessary work to fix a problem that could have been easily prevented.

It is also worth noting that the aluminum spacers were painted everywhere except the inside of the bolt holes. All of the damage and corrosion started in the bolt holes and worked into the other parts. From the outside everything looked fine except one bolt seemed to be riding a bit high. We went to check it and discovered what was really going on.

Oh my goodness I thought i responded to you weeks ago. My apologies.
It looks like the spacers are about 92mm long, 38mm wide, and the outer edge of the holes are ~77.2 mm apart. The hole dimension is really the only one that needs to be close. I would recommend double checking it on your car.

I think the holes are for 12mm bolts and they should run straight through the center of the spacer.
