HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

electric power steering pump (volvo)
has anyone attempted to run an electric power steering pump on their swap? Specifically, I am looking into the Volvo S40 and V50 pumps from about 2005 to 2013. These are fairly common on mustang coyote swaps and some drift cars. I ran across one at a mustang show a couple of weeks ago and thought it would work well. I was going to try and fit it in the passenger front fender area and try and run the stock power steering reservoir with it.

I would be concerned about the electric pumps ability to flow enough and have correct pressure for both steering and hydroboost. But, it might work fine.

I installed a Vauxhall Astra pump on mine (not swapped, but big turbo). Pump worked fine, no issues at all about pressure!
There is an australian topic about it.

Re: electric power steering pump (volvo)
I actually installed the volvo pump. I ultimately removed it. It seemed to not be enough for both power steering and braking.
I would have one or the other. If i braked first i would lose steering and thw same with the other. I ended up removing and going with the Mustang unit like others have.

Re: electric power steering pump (volvo)
I had purchased a VW Polo EPS pump for my V6 swapped 944. After reading this thread, the linked Mustang thread and a further linked thread in an EV forum I thought I would test the pump. It refused to show any sign of life so I obtained a Volvo pump.
I was intending to control the pump by speed through Canbus as the VW pump had that facility but I was always worried the VW pump would require some other instruction to make it operate.
I have just installed the Volvo pump and it works well with the BMW Mini steering rack I have installed. The turns from lock to lock are 2.3 and there does not appear to be any labouring. It does not have to also push a hydroboost as I have a remote booster for the front brakes.
The Mustang thread has details of a control unit that is available that can control assistance through either speed or a potentiometer. I will be using this unit to take speed from the ECU by Canbus to this control unit.
Happy I found this thread.

Re: electric power steering pump (volvo)
Congrats on making it work. it seems to be a good setup if it works. For me the unit seemed to not have enough power for brakes and steering together. I do also have 6 piston brakes up front. I will track my car some day so i definitely need a consistent option
