For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Hello, I'm in the early stages of my conversion. 944 engine is out. Conversion kit on the way. 98 corvette engine has been purchased. Is it possible to get a camaro alt. w/bracket and a power steering assembly w/brackets to make my engine fit. I was told by RH that I had to have everything off the front of an f body engine to make it work. I am looking at camaro diagrams while looking at my vett motor and the only difference seems to be the location of the alt. and power steering. Am I way lost or should I go the RH route. Any opinions on this matter would be great. 1991 944S2

Welcome aboard - yeah, having gone through the Vette ( '98 Drive By Wire) upgrade myself, the f-body mounts and alternator/compressor are the way to go (unless you know extraterrestrials that can shrink the '98 Vette accessories). Decision in the end is yours, but I learned more about my conversion from the guys that frequent this site, than the RH crew. No such thing as a dumb question here.....well maybe...... Smile

I did a 2000 Vette conversion and the accessories are needed, will also have to look at the PS pump, Harmonic Balancer, pullies...

I watched EBay and got my brackets from there, though checking craigslist and calling junk yards to see if they have a blow motor with the brackets is not a bad way to go either.

Good luck, you have no idea how fun this will be when you are done, no IDEA AT ALL.

'98 CORVETTE MOTOR F BODY ACCESORIES Empty Corvette Accessories

I have obtained a 99 LS1 from a C5 Vette, it has all its accessories.
At this point I'm still collecting parts for the swap, can someone explain exactly why
the vette accessories will not fit. Surely removing the 944 water tank makes room for the
alternator. Help.

The serpentine setup will not let you get the engine in. The alternator is too big and will hit the motor mounts, not to mention the A/C compressor witting the passenger-side frame. Resistance is futile - sell the Vette accessories on EBay and use the money to get F-Body parts. Also, do you have the valve covers with the breather port (on the drivers side) toward the rear of the engine? If so, you're either going to need to modify them like I had to, or check out Greg's Wilwood brake setup.

IMHO I would sell the 'vette motor and get a late model F-body LS1. Unless you are friends with a really good F-body junk yard, this retrofit is going to cost you a bundle. If you're trying to save bragging rights to say "my Porsche has a 'vette motor," don't sweat it. Other than the belt driven accessories, the F-body and 'vette LS1's are the same. The earlier motors had a different cam for the 'vette so that it made a bit more HP, but by the time the later F-bodies came out the cams were almost the same and they even had the larger LS6 intake manifold. Also note that a really early 'vette LS1 has different valve covers (as Skywalker so painfully learned) that WILL interfere with your master cylinder and the engine wire harness must be modified for the relocated alternator and AC compressor.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

How can the vette alternator interfere with the motor mounts? The alternator is level with and in front of the cylinder head?

I have purchased Greg's kit and a Wilwood tandem dual MC.

Having done two swaps into other cars, I'm sure that brackets could be fabricated to relocate the alt and or the compressor, even if it means switching to smaller units.

As for bragging rights, I quit doing that when I was a teenager.

Fliermike -
Sorry.....it's been so long since I messed with the engine - but according to the drawing posted above, the alternator is close to hitting the hood....and if I remember correctly the driver's side fender. Changing over to the F-Body configuration is not all that expensive or complicated (other than the valve covers), but it is nice to have the extra ponies (not just the bragging rights) Very Happy

'98 CORVETTE MOTOR F BODY ACCESORIES Empty Thanks

Post  fliermike45 Fri Feb 05, 2010 2:30 pm

Thanks for the info guys.
When I pull the porsche motor I will do a trial fit and see what will or won't work.
I see the alt/comp brackets for the f body on ebay for 86 bucks.

This is my third swap and compromises (sp) make it more fun.
If it was simply bolt in, m-----s would do it.

'98 CORVETTE MOTOR F BODY ACCESORIES Empty Another question.

Post  fliermike45 Fri Feb 05, 2010 7:56 pm

I have just measured the distance between the frame rails at the front of the engine bay, it's 26 1/4"
Then I measured from the center line of the crank pulley to the edge of the compressor pulley, just under 13 inches. Why can't I keep the stock Vette (LS1) a/c compressor and bracket?
Thanks again.

Sticks out too far. You would have to cut a CHUNK out of the passenger-side
frame rail. There is no compromise in this conversion.

'98 CORVETTE MOTOR F BODY ACCESORIES Empty Camaro accesories

Post  ROGUE S2 Sun Feb 07, 2010 11:30 am

Hey guys, thanks for the info. using the camaro accesories on my vett motor. The camaro stuff should be here tues. with any luck, you know how salvage yards are. I saw that the '98 vette valve covers had an issue with a vent on the drivers side. Can I modify this vent or will new valve covers be required.
Thanks, David P.S. This web site is the best!

You will have to modify them or get new heads - this is what I did.

'98 CORVETTE MOTOR F BODY ACCESORIES Empty Valve cover vent.

Post  fliermike45 Sun Feb 07, 2010 12:33 pm

Is this modification required if using the Willwood 260-7563 master cylinder?
Do you have a photo of your installation?
I assume that the brass nipple fitting is to replace the vent that you closed off.
Thanks.

Maybe - I am using the RH cereal bowl replacement. Since the Wilwood seems to be off to
the side, it may work. Wish I could have had the option when I was dropping my engine in.
Yeah, the nipple is for the vent.
