Re: Mounting a VSS on a pre 85.5?
Thanks, I will check mine. The colors for the sensor and the PCM don't match.

Costs?
I am very curious about the cost to machine a 944 cam gear, and cost of the gear.

Mike,
Post over on Pelican Parts 944 parts forum for the cam gear. I bet you can get one for next to nothing.
I don't remember what my machine shop charged to do the work, but it was not much.

Is there a part number for the sensor I can use?

Does his require the longer bolts as well? If so, anyone know the size? I've had his for a while and am finally getting ready to install it. It looks much narrower than the cam gear so I thought I could get away with the stock bolts, but now I'm not sure.

I ended up just removing the tranny output shaft and welding 5 equally spaced knobs on the outer flange. I used the 2002 camaro VSS and wired it to my computer. Car seems to run quite well and has no problem finding idle at speed.

Re: Mounting a VSS on a pre 85.5?
Have you scanned the computer to check to see if its throwing a code for the VSS? I just got my car tuned and the sensor I'm using appears not be compatible with the LT1 computer. My car runs fine without it; just sucks that I bought the kit and didn't need it. (EDIT - I bought the kit from Greg and Im not sure what sensor he used).
Does any know for sure if the 2002 camaro VSS works with the LT1 computer?

The sensor itself should all read the same, 40 pulses per rev. maybe the wiring is messed up. Have you run a scan tool to see if it shows any reading?
Re: Mounting a VSS on a pre 85.5?
Unfortunately no, his laptop battery was dead and could only run from an extension cord. It's not tripping the CEL light, so I'm not really worried about it. It only showed up on his laptop.
I was reading a little about the code last night; I think it may be related to the VSS output for the gauges not being hooked up. I'm going to go back and get him to delete the code and see what happens.
This link may help some people in the future trying to figure this out.
