HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Get a cam gear from any 944/951 motor and have the middle machined out to fit over the passenger's side inner CV. Make a simple mounting plate. The holes are already tapped into the transmission.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
You will need a sensor from a 2002 Camaro with automatic transmission and when the brain gets flashed have the tuner choose auto transmission for VSS. (auto trans has same number of teeth as the 944 cam gear. All you need to do is flatten the mounting bracket that comes on the sensor and drill a hole for the sensor to go through the plate. Use small washers to set gap.
You will need longer cv bolts which can be had from McMaster-Carr.

Any chance you remember what length CV bolts you used?

I don't recall what length you need, but it's a very standard length. I got some at a local hardware store that had hex heads and fit in the space just fine. I believe i had to cut the clamp off the CV boot, but i haven't had any leakage issues either.
The holes in the transmission side are through-holes, so length isn't incredibly important (if they're a little too long, it doesn't matter).

Best cheapest route would be to buy a $99 GPS to mount on your windshield. The good thing about this besides telling you your speed is that it's a GPS with maps and directions with a female voice telling you where to go

My speedo works fine, my computer just needs to know how fast I am going. Not sure if I want another female voice telling me where to go.

1.25 x 60 Blue class 12.9. Socket head cap screw. Part number: 91303A207 @ McMaster-Carr
After installation check clearance between bolts and tranny case by spinning wheel slowly 360 degrees.
I forgot to mention, the machine shop should drill the holes to match the CV bolt holes as well.

Well, I have my old 83' 944 lawnmower engine about 15' from where I'm sitting. I can pull the cam gear if you want.
EDIT: No charge, just pay shipping.

Mike,
I'm picking up two cars tomorrow, one is a parts car. Engine fire. If you want the cam tower just pay for shipping and it's yours.

VSS
I have asked this question on LS1 Tech and asked the Techs in my shop. and have heared yes you need it, and no it isnt necessary. My car is a 83 944 manual trans, the wiring harness is 98 camaro SS manual trans car. If i have to have it thats fine, I have an extra cam gear to use for the reluctor, but if i really dont need it id rather not have to run the extra wiring to the back of the car. thanks.

From what I understand:
Some people have been able to run this for a short amount of time without having problems, but I think most everyone has eventually hooked it up. The car will run without the VSS installed, but drive-ability will suffer. I think the biggest issue is having trouble idling and taking off from an idle. I found a more detailed explanation on one of the swap sites. Let me see if I can find it.

It's just a single pair of wires. Don't be lazy.

lt1swap.com wrote:VSS - You should KEEP a vehicle speed sensor regardless of what transmission type you use. The PCM needs to know if vehicle is moving. Without the speed sensor, you can suffer from reduced fuel economy, reduced power, and idle problems. There are a few options for speed sensors on the transmissions with cable drive output. View this link at Dakota Digital website. I have used Dakota Digital SEN-4160 with good success. This is a 8000 pulse per mile sensor, that will allow cable speedometer hookup. I can program any PCM to accept any # of speed pulses.

Is there a part number for the sensor I can use?

Re: Mounting a VSS on a pre 85.5?
I now have the cam gear and the 2002 camaro VSS on my workbench. Question, is the 2002 VSS compatable with the 1995 LT1 pcm. The PCM is for a caprice automatic.
Second question, The VSS that came with my wiring harness has a different plug than the newer VSS takes. I have the correct plug in my parts bin but It will have to be spliced in. Are the two wires specific in function or can they be swapped?

I'm sorry but the fact that you are dealing with a LT rather than a LS escaped me. Can't help with the LT.

Has anyone cut their cam gear in 1/2 (or perhaps 1/3's even) so that you don't have to get it over the CV when mounting and removing it from the axle?

They are not interchangeable on the LS series. One is the low signal(Lt Grn/Blk) and the other is the high signal(ppl/white).
