HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Question on steering rack dimension Empty Question on steering rack dimension

Post  grobb284 Sun Mar 27, 2011 6:02 pm

Can someone verify that the Porsche 944 steering rack is 22.6" center to center of the inner tie rod pivots?

Thanks in advance.

Power rack I verified myself.... The manual rack I was told that it was 20.625" but wasn't sure if that included the male threading that is M22 x 1.5

If the rack end to end is 21", do you think the center to center of the inner tie rod pivots is in the vicinity of the 22.6" I saw in a catalogue?

Your picture and dimensions are quite helpful.

The inner tie-rod joint is 1.375" and it lookks like the B-joint is situated a little further out, so yes It would all calc. to 22.6"

Something interesting to note, when I set up the X-member to line-bore the control arm points, the Bridgeport readout measured 25.51" center to center on the X-member Control arm bolt-thrus. When I did my bump steer kit, I also measured the Power Rack (+-) 2.5" left/right travel from center. So this means that in a straight line, inner tie-rod ball joint center/pivots are 1.5" inboard of the control arm pivots.... This info could be used to find an inexpensive manual rack with better steering ratio...

I have looked for some time for an inexpensive manual rack in the 22.6 inch range. I was unable to find anything domestic. There may be something RHD in a Foreign rear steer car that could be flipped to RHD front steer.

Are you on the other side of the pond?

For our pond side I would use an 80-81 Toyota Tercel manual rack and pinion if swapping to manual.... 4.25 turns cloc-2-cloc would make life bearable. The power inner tie-rods bolt right in too.

I'm near Dayton, Ohio

Is that model Tercel a front steer? If so, how close is the dimension to the 21.6" for center to center for the inner tie rod pivots?

I tried to find one locally a while back to measure the end to end. I do know that they are front steer, have m14 x 1.5 inner tie rod threading (match 944 PS tie-rods) and the 80-81 Tercel manual rack is 4.25 turns lock-to-lock whereas the 83-87 Tercel manual rack is 3.75 turns lock-to-lock. The 80 tercel rack looks like a better shaft input angle and length from the pics too although it is 15mm dia. Jap spline.
