For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Issue: engine abruptly dies after driving or idleing for 10-15 minutes. Won't restart until sits for 20-30 mins. and then will only run 5 ish mins. Aware common issue with possible failing opti, ICM, coil. Will be having codes checked.
Question is when attempting to restart after motor dies, when turning ignition key fuel pump does not cycle on as usual 3-4 seconds before cranking.
Bad DME relay ruled out. Thinking possible Fuel pump? maybe heat binding?
Anyone else have this?
Obviously want to be as sure as can be, ya right, before replacing Opti.

if the fuel pump is not priming with key on during the failure i would check to see if you have power at the fuel pump during priming, and if not jump power to the pump and see if it comes on and if the car will then start.

you might be dealing with a fuel pump problem and not an optispark problems

Fuel pump runs jumpered No Start Opti?
What's strange does Opti have anything to do with fuel pump priming when turning key to start? (When not jumpered)

did you try starting it with the fuel pump jumped?

gm computers command the fuel pump to prime, a failed optispark shouldnt cause the ecm to not prime the pump. do you by chance have a scan tool capable of reading the data stream? that would be my first thing, watch the data for rpm when cranking, fuel pump command, vats, etc.

Replaced Opti Petris brand and coil only, not ICM.
Still have problem. If mechanic used die electric grease not thermal paste a little while back would ICM getting too hot cause issue And possibly ruined the ICM? I'm going to try cleaning and applying paste between ICM and heatsink, correct? Before replacing.

That reminds me that mine is "dry". I know you are suppossed to put some thermal paste in there, but I didn't have any and it's been like that now for years and thousands of miles.

How is the wiring where it bends around to plug into the coil? Common failure point and I had to buy a new connector end and harness to splice in.

Mine primes the fuel pump every time the key is switched on. Probably has to do with that circuit.

My connector plug has broken lock clip, I'll have to order one. Might be it? Both Coil and ICM connector plugs have 12v +/- with key on even when twisting/wiggling connectors and wires. My key turn to on also primes FP but currently nothing. Spare coil for test question, does coil need to be fully mounted to heatsink and bolted down to test?

No, I recently started mine with the coil just laying on one of the coolant hoses, not bolted in place.

Do you have a timing gun you can hook up to one of plug wires as you crank it to see if you're getting spark?

No spark period. Even tho power in coil connector plug key on test no spark from coil. What was your issue with the coil connector? BTW tried spare coil no spark.
