HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Hi this is my first post. I am well on my way with an Lm7 swap in my 86 951. I swapped to Camaro accessories and Ls6 intake and fuel rails. My hydroboost just arrived as well as a Spec clutch. Kent from TPC has been awesome to deal with and recommend him highly. I put in a LSexcelation stage 2 cam and Ls6+ valve springs. I will be ordering a harness from PSI and a Mail-order tune for the stock Ecm.

Re: New to forum
Welcome to the Forum!!
These builds are exciting because we're all "smitten" with the anticipated supercar performance from these swaps.
Be sure to study the various procedures documented on this Forum as there are certain build sequences to follow and MANY details to resolve. There is next to no room at all in the engine bay once the engine is installed so a lot of thought has to go into where all the ancillary components will go and how they are installed. I'm currently wrestling with coil pack relocation due to HB/MC interference and my aftermarket Holley valve cover isn't making it any easier.
From my experience, TPC is a great resource for conversion parts and advice, so you're on the right track there!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sure lots of folks will be following your progress... I know I will be.

Re: New to forum
Thanks Raymond P for welcome. I also have need to move my coil brackets. I plan to use #40 chain link side plates to relocate my brackets slightly forwards and 1/2" closer to the fuel rails. I'll do it this weekend and post some pics . The extra nuts , bolts and links was only $15 . Once it's all lined up I plan to just use rtv to keep it all in place so it remounts like factory.

Re: New to forum
Hi,I used a gal of Simple Green cleaner and a lot of scrubbing to get the engine clean. I cut out the fins on the bottom of the Ls6 intake to leave make room for the steam lines. There is also one hole that has to be drilled and tapped to mount the LS1 alternator bracket. I used ICT brackets for the power steering and alternator [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Drill and tap
Let me know how you make out with the hole that has to be drilled and tapped. Thats something I'm not looking forward to.

Maple,
Word of caution... installation of any king of mounting plate or bracket on the valve cover, potentially interferes with mounting the MC to the HB. I'm having that challenge right now.
Below is a pic of the aluminum coil #3 relocation bracket I fabricated for my Holley valve cover. I need two of these for #3 and #5 plus I'm putting #7 coil pack on the strut tower.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The MC can just barely be inserted in the HB adapter but there is no room to insert and tighten the mounting bolts with the #5 coil bracket in place. If I install the MC 1st, I can't tighten the cover bolts for the relocation bracket.
I'll figure it out eventually and post my solution.

I ran into similar issues. Originally fabricated seperate mounting brackets for the coils, but innthe end just looked like a mess. Resorted to fabricating a plate that allowed me to tower the brackets on the front of the valve cover. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Leva,
I like the looks of your set-up! The 1st time I saw it I didn't think it would work for me because my #3 coil pack does not clear the MC. Now that you mention fabricating a separate mounting plate instead of just stacking with spacers, I see how this could work for me too. Staying away from that congested HB/MC area is very attractive!!
I presume you made a single mounting plate adapter that shifts the entire group forward and is bolted to the original coil pack mounting bosses, right ???
I'm going down to the garage right now to explore this option!!

Re: New to forum
Just checked and stacking all 4 coil packs is going to be a super simple solution with my Holley valve cover!!! I'm really excited to get past this dilemma. THANKS LEVA!!
It seems all I need to do is fabricate a couple of straight aluminum straps with 6mm holes drilled at each end for bolted connections to the original front four coil pack mounting bosses on the valve cover. Then drilling a third hole mid-length of each strap to mount coil stack 5/7 just forward enough to clear the MC. Coil stack 1/3 will mount at the original coil pack #1 location on top of the aluminum straps.
Now I just need to round up some 6 mm bolts that are long enough and cut some spacers from 1/4" copper tubing so the stacked coil packs won't touch. The rest is just wiring!
I'll post some pics tomorrow to show how it turns out.

JW, Looks great!!!
Do you have any pics of your air intake system under the front panel? What type of "collector" did you use? My throttle body needs a 4" dia. intake tube.
If you have posted this somewhere on the forum already...just point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Awe Yes!! I remember now, you used a VCM OTR cold air intake! Nice!
I need to do more research on this.

Re: New to forum
Hi it seems that the truck coils sit a lot lower than the car ones and the stock truck valve covers are also a lot lower. I installed my new mounts which move the entire truck coil bracket 1" closer to the fuel rails but found I have to cut out a portion of the bracket to accommodate the fuel line. I'll do it first thing tomorrow morning and post pic. I am pretty sure everything will clear the TPC hydroboost and reservoir. If not I will have move the coils to another location. I'll know for sure when bolting the motor in in the next week or so

Re: New to forum
Hi I was told by Kent the truck coils only hit by about 1/8". I moved the whole thing a full inch. I hope it is enough. I'll see when I put the motor in.
