HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

What Transaxle (transmission) are you using? Empty What Transaxle (transmission) are you using?

Post  968gene Sat Sep 05, 2009 9:42 pm

I have purchased a turbo transaxle that has been prepped for track duty. It has a 80/80 LSD unit (80% lock up on acceleration and 80% on deceleration) that would probably not be the best street choice. The factory split is probably better for a street car. The turbo is nice because it has a higher final drive ratio than the NA gear boxes. This keeps the RPMs in a reasonable range at track speeds.

One choice I had was to use my 944S transaxle. I found that the 944S and the 944S2 trans share the same gear sets as the turbo trans except the final drive ratio. In other words, the S and S2 boxes have beefier gears and bearings, yet carry the same final drive ratio as the NA transmissions. Instead of opting for a rebuild of my S trans and adding an LSD and a cooler, I just purchased one.

If you are looking for a turbo trans for durability and want a NA final drive, then look at the S and S2 gear boxes.

I'll be adding a cooler with an electric pump, a la TonyG. If you have any ideas or suggestions on this project, let me know.

Maybe keep your turbo box, and swap out the 5th gear from one of your NA boxes.

That will lower the RPM in 5th for crusing (Unless your S/S2 box has the short 5th gear lol)

There wil be no "cruising" in this track car! Cool

What final drive ratio is that?

8:33 or 4.125:1 with a 3.1666 first gear. It's like having a 4.56 in a 2nd gen Camaro with a Super T-10.

It will be fine with my engine because it will make peak torque at 5500 RPM and peak HP at 7500 RPM. Chevy 302 w/forged crank, powdered rods, forged pisorns, roller cam and rockers, ported aluminum heads and ported LT1 FI intake, full length 3/4" headers. My dyno software says 370 ft.lbs. @ 5500 RPM and 480 HP @ 7500 RPM with mufflers. (413 ft.lbs./521 HP with open headers)

What Transaxle (transmission) are you using? Empty Admin'as viper trans install?

Post  turbobob924 Sat Oct 10, 2009 3:32 pm

Admin,

I am intrigued by your viper transmission swap!

Do you have any more pictures or install tips?

Does this setup still use a torque tube?

There must have been a bunch of cutting to get it to fit?

More info please!

I do have more info, but I'll post some pictures when I can get it back on the rack. I removed everything from the flywheel back. I left only the Porsche axles and outer hubs.
Don't be to intrigued by it all. I still break stuff! Shocked
I am assembling a Cobra replica for a customer at the moment. It's on the lift right now. When it's done and I get all the bugs worked out of Kent's car (Vorsche944). I plan to remove the complete drive train again and install a straight axle with a 4 link setup. Hopefully I will not break that. With the Viper rear end I did not have much room to work under the car, the exhaust hangs low and the rear end is not in the perfect position. I am going to install the 4 link as a bolt in setup if I can.
