HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

I need some help!
I started the conversion last weekend when I noticed I may have a problem. I'm using an adapter plate that someone else has designed. It uses a mcleod 1400 series hydraulic bearing that screws onto a shaft on the adapter plate. I bolted the adapter plate on the torque tube and I put the pressure plate and clutch disk on. The distance the torque tube tip sticks out from the disk is only 7/16" without the 1/8" clearance it needs to the pressure plate fingers. I then thought the problem must be the torque tube position. I measured it and it measures 5 7/8"; which is greater than the 5.69" porsche spec. I'm using a centerforce pressure plate, could it be the problem? Hopefully the pictures I took show up.

You can move the driveshaft forward in the torque tube a little bit with a gentle hammering.

I know; but it is already out of spec @ 5 7/8". I'm going to test fit the engine this weekend before I make any forward adjustment on the torque tube. I think I may have to recess that bearing.
Do pressure plates vary in depth?

Spencer,
The 5 7/8" dimension is OK. The pressure plate must be bolted to the flywheel (fingers compressed) and the disc and pressure plate will move rearward on the torque tube. 5 7/8" will properly engage the pilot bearing. Test-fitting the clutch / PP the way you are will not properly locate the clutch assembly, in other words. The throwout bearing height / position appears correct...

Re: I need some help!
Ok, thanks Greg. I was worried for a minute. So the pressure plate will compress by the same thickness as the clutch disk?

Re: I need some help!
Probably a little more than that...
The disc / pressure plates are all the same height at the center hub (of the disc) when compressed.
The most important spec is the torque tube tip-to-flange dimension.
The only disc issue I have heard of was with the RH "upgrade" disc for the LS.

Um, what issue Greg? I have the Kevlar disc and RH stage 2 pressure plate, I think stage 2, it was a long time ago and many dineros when I bought that. When I destroy that setup, I'll be looking to a SPEC from you!

Oh, should have elaborated...
Skywalker's clutch hub interference with the ARP (?) flywheel bolts.
I'll be using a SPEC setup also, being a dealer ya know...

PP spline extension dimensions will vary some after bolt-down. The reason for the Throwout bearing shims....
How thick are the two sandwiched plates combined? and how tall is the concentric throwout bearing?

I'll take some measurements when I get home from work. I think everything should work out fine. I never thought of the PP and disk being compressed when bolted to the flywheel; makes complete sense... I'm putting in the engine this weekend and I'll know for sure if this adpater plate setup works. I've got my fingers crossed!

The thickness of the two plates combined is 1" (the torque tube is inset 1/2" though). The bearing is 2" high.

Looks like a pretty simple and straight-forward setup! Good luck.
