HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

CyCloNe! wrote:So basically if I ordered Eric's LS conversion kit it would work with the 5.3L Truck engine. I'm trying to buy all the parts over time that way it less of a hit. For the computer what had to be done in order for it to work correctly? Did you use the Porsche one or a GM computer? Also with the 5.3l engine are you still able to use the Porsche brakes and brake booster? I have an 86 951 so I was hoping to stick with the stock brakes for a bit.
That is correct Eric's kit it will work perfect. Also the truck computer that you get with the engine is the one that you will be using to run the motor. ECU tunes are up to you. The Porsche stuff that stays is the fuse box and a few relays etc that control things inside and on the car. Lights, AC etc. Also if you use the truck motor like those of us who have you will need to use a Corvette, LS1 Firebird or Camaro Intake because the truck one is too tall unless you go with a hood scoop. I have an extra intake if you have trouble finding one. You can keep your stock brakes but you have to loose the booster and go with manual brakes using the stock Porsche master cylinder or manual brakes using an aftermarket master cylinder or a hydra boost set up that uses the power steering to provide assist for your brakes. Good luck with your build.

Re: Xschop's 5.3 LM7 build
Yes, Eric's kit is 100% bolt-on friendly to the iron-block LS truck motors. He'll even mod your harness and tune your truck ECM. Get a 2002 or below ECM and harness for DRIVE BY CABLE and an LS1 intake. You can build your own booster delete kit by the 1/4" firewall plate dims I posted and use your factory 944 MC then upgrade later to hydroboost or a bigger Wilwood MC.

Re: Xschop's 5.3 LM7 build
I changed the name of the thread for those searching the truck motor swap. Since my last post I have finally (due to a nasty OKC pothole) installed 285-35-18's on the rear and getting even better Hiway MPG's (@31-32)
At 75mph I'm rotating at 2700 and I think my tach is still a little too high. according to the Speed calculator, I should be doing 2550 at 75mph with these tires, 3.375 R&P and .73 5th gear.
Also as a side note, after working with Fliermike, I've come to the conclusion that the Steering shaft pinch-bolt centers only need 1/2" extension when doing 3/4" X-member drop for the Power steering rack install due to it's angle. I can see why no shaft mod is done when the X-member is dropped only 1/2" with X-member spacers as there is play in the steering rack spline slots.

Hey Rob, did you have to roll the fenders at all to get those 285s under there?

Re: Xschop's 5.3 LM7 build
No I did not. I was worried about these new ones as they are a liitle wider actually. When I put on the 285-30-18's originally, I machined 3/8" spacers for the rear to keep them from rubbing inside and ground down the rear body area near the torsion rebound plates as they stick out some. I read that the 944 torsion bar assembly shifts towards the driver's side and that was the case on this car as well....FYI

Re: Xschop's 5.3 LM7 build
Nitto's. I still have the Nankang II's upfront and they are a great tire for the money. The Nitto's have more bite and being 1" taller O.D. I'm surprised that the clutch action in 1st gear is not much different and it launches just as fast, it just doesn't wind out quite as quick obviously. Great price too at $213 each
EDIT...Just checked and the seller increased the price.....

Also these help with the anti-grind on hard launches and definitely the railroad track jumps. I drilled and tapped the rear control arms for these spuds. The poly bump stops are from a VW

Re: Xschop's 5.3 LM7 build
Wow, 31-32mpg. I haven't done a freeway run in my car when I haven't been towing my tire trailer behind the car but I seriously doubt I'm getting more than 22mpg and more than likely I'm getting less than that.
This is with a LS1 375rwhp, stock turbo S tranny and 285-35-18 rear tires.
How are you getting such outstanding mpg?

Doc, you should move down here to normal sea levels, then check your MPG. You also have the lower .83 5th gear and more displacement. I do run acetone 1:640 petro consistently. You should try some as it is an oxygenate.

What's the NA 5th gear ratio again? I'm at 3250 rpm at 80mph, what are you seeing at 80mph?

Re: Xschop's 5.3 LM7 build
NA 5th = .72
At 80mph I'm right under 2900...IIRC The O.D. of these new tires are 25.85"

Hmm, a 300 rpm difference shouldn't make a 10mpg delta. I know I'm not running rich, I've got a wide band Air/Fuel gauge in the car and I'm cycling in stoich at cruise.
I really wish I could add a 6th gear to the tranny and drop 1000 rpm from 5th to 6th.

Year before last when I went to Winterpark in a Prius rental I was getting 49 MPG from here to Kansas. While I was in Denver for the week I got about 38 MPG.

My last tank was about 2/3 freeway and 1/3 city. I got my best mpg ever - 18.5.

Re: Xschop's 5.3 LM7 build
Hey Aco, what size engine and gear ratios? Altitude? Also your car weight? My car weighs 2900 now. I still think the tach is reading high. It's showing idle at 1050-1100. I bet Map21's 4.8 build will be the most fuel efficient when it's done depending on his altitude. I drive to Stillwater and back at least once a week and down to Norman and back twice a week, that's when I calculate MPG's at 70mph, all hiway.
On another note, besides the better MPG of the 951 trans with NA 5th installed, the 951 Pinion is 72.5mm at the base and is one beefy mofo. This pic is Raymon's rebuild and when I get a chance, I'll cryotreat a 951 R&P and entire 951 gearset myself....

LS1 5.7 with std. Turbo trans. I do have a taller 5th (taller than the NA, even) to swap in, but I haven't had the time to get to it yet. Car had not been lightened in any way, I assume it weighs about 3000 lbs.

Re: Xschop's 5.3 LM7 build
acorad, what 5th gear did you grab? I'd love a much taller 5th gear, I don't use it on the track, so it's purely an overdriven freeway gear for me.
Your car may weigh more than 3000lbs. Mine weighs 3000lbs with some lightening, like no back seat, sound deadening under the carpets etc. My rollbar adds back 85lbs though...

Re: Xschop's 5.3 LM7 build
Altitude is pretty low, around 800'. The tall 5th is from Audi 5000 diesel 016 trans w/0.68 5th. And the car probably does weigh more than 3000 lbs, I really should get the thing weighed one of these days!

Re: Xschop's 5.3 LM7 build
Did you find them new? I've looked everywhere. I will want a set for the l92 build....not so gas friendly
Also the ethanol blends have less BTU per volume as the etoh percentage increases. I have a friend that works at the Corp Commision and he says most pumps that advertise 10% etoh are more like 18%.

I got the entire 5000 Diesel tranny used from Jerry's Foreign in the Pacific NW somewhere: 408-993-9711. I really should install the dam thing.
