For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Post  smkn951 Tue Sep 17, 2019 12:54 pm

Hello everyone,
I would like to first introduce myself. My name is Carl, i've been lurking around here for a short time and i must say, this community has a wealth of knowledge.
I have an 86 944t that i restored. I got it as a retirement present from the wife in hopes that i would stay busy and out of trouble.....Busy i was for 1-1/2 years in working diligently in getting this car up and running to be my Daily driver.
The car started of as white with numerous body fillers, blown head gasket, leaking fluids from all components, no A/C, no heat, no lights working, dry rotted interior, messed up shifter, bad drive shafts, unserviceable clutch, worn brakes.....OMG it truly was a project. So busy....I was, until YOU guys came along...now I'm in trouble...LS SWAP!!really? well it was son's fault for planting the seed.....
this is the before and after restoration.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I picked a complete running engine for the swap
04 Pontiac GTO $800.00, I had a deal because i helped pull it out. It came with LS6 intake already (oh yeah!!, i heard this is good?)
replaced the 241 heads with 243s for $400.00 (valves came with it and bolts)
replaced cam with torquer v2 kit. (springs, seals, pushrods) apprx $700 for the kit
went and replaced timing chain with an ls2 chain and added a chain dampener $150
installed HV oil pump (cant remember the price)
replaced cam shaft bearings, rod bearings and main bearing and piston rings apprx $150
ARP connecting rod bolts
Oil pan from TPC
replaced lifter with ls7 lifters and trays $120
head gasket, water pump gasket, timing cover and rear cover gaskets and seals, oil pan gasket[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

thats all so far what i've done to the engine.
Pease let me know if theres any (while it's out) to do.

86 Porsche 944T LS1 swap begins Empty maybe getting ahead of myself

Post  smkn951 Wed Sep 18, 2019 1:26 pm

Hello again everyone,
i have the original wiring harness and pc for the car along with the fuse box and vats module.
i will be rebuilding the harness myself (cleaning it up a bit)
I would like to send of the computer to be programmed and checked.
is there a list somewhere what all needs to be done for the conversion programming?
I would like to run A/C and two speed fan so far....
do i need specifics on what i've done to the engine so it can have a base tune?
do i just plug and play and have the dyno shop program on the fly?
will it run without any programming enough to drive to the shop?
thanks everyone

Car looks great! Send the GM ECU off to this guy for a "mail order tune".

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

It's not as good as a full dyno tune, but will allow you to drive the car and work the bugs out until it's "dyno time"!

86 Porsche 944T LS1 swap begins Empty harness problem

Post  smkn951 Thu Sep 26, 2019 7:28 pm

looking at the wiring harness......it is toally different from what is described on LT1Swap site. theres a body control module connected to it... the starter wires are on a different harness...it's just a total mess. i want to keep the a/c, 2 speed fan...but its on the bcm harness. can this be put in the ecm? theres a VSS low/ high signal on green connector pins 20/ 21, do i need these 2? theres also a VSS signal pin 50. is this the only one needed?i'm so confused...any words of advise and routes to take are greatly appreciated.
thanks

It is a lot to go thru. I am in the middle of my swap as well. This is what I have learned and please anyone correct me if I'm wrong. Pins 20/21 go to the vss(vehicle speed sensor) which is an option to add. Some dont use it, but I think most do. It is a sensor on the axle in the back of the car. It can b sourced out or u can buy a kit from tpc or renegade. The single pin 50 is for a digital speedometer. U will have to tap into the cars working for a couple wires. The key hot, the starter, and the fuel pump. If u look at the wiki manual it goes thru a lot of this stuff. Hope this helps

Is it necessary to remove the old pilot bearing from the crank before installing the tpc pilot bearing adapter and bearing?

found the answer...removal of the pilot bearing isn't necessary from what i see. The pilot bearing adapter sits in front of it flushed. whew..unless of course theres others that may shed more light into what i just read.
thanks.

86 Porsche 944T LS1 swap begins Empty Pilot Bearing Replacement

Post  Raymond-P Sat Dec 07, 2019 11:25 pm

Carl,

Congrats on your decision to do an LS swap.  Very exciting!  I've been at it for sometime now and I'm about to install the LS finally.

My thread covers replacement of the pilot bearing in detail if you want to check it out.

86 Porsche 944T LS1 swap begins Empty Re: 86 Porsche 944T LS1 swap begins

Post  Raymond-P Wed Dec 11, 2019 11:31 pm

My apologies!   After reading your question and revisiting my files, I realize now that my previous post statement was incorrect in that the TPC kit does indeed include a new Porsche pilot bearing and an LS/Porsche pilot bearing "adapter" just as you described.  I pressed the two together early and forgot that step.

I did not measure the adapter depth but my Greg Sloan Conversion Manual says it is 1.00" thick.  The adapter is to be fully seated in the crank and the Porsche PB is to be fully seated in the adapter. Remember that you must take care installing the adapter as you do not want to impact the LS crank at the risk of damaging the main bearing seals.

The seat depth of the adapter is a function of the crack shaft flange so you have no control over that.  I dug up the schematics below that should help you understand how it all fits together.  If you have sufficient clearance between the rear of the adapter and the hub of the clutch plate to avoid contact, you should be good to go.  You will have to install the flywheel to tell for sure.  If you don't have sufficient clearance, perhaps the adapter is not seated fully.  From your PM it seems that your PB is seated OK, but it's best to measure.

The pic below is the stock LS configuration showing the crankshaft oil gallery plug.  From this schematic it appears the old LS PB could have remained since it is set so deep in the crack flange.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The diagram below is from my Greg Sloan conversion manual and illustrates the machining dimensions for the PB adapter.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The final diagram below is from XSChop and provides all the clearances needed from the crank to the Torque Tube and everything in between.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I just ordered new torque tube bearings and will be removing my TT soon.  I plan to do a test fit with my LS while it's still on the stand just to make sure everything fits correctly.

Provided that all goes well, I will likely connect the reconstructed TT to the LS and install the assembly as one unit.  By then I should have the old 944S trans-axle out as well so it should be pretty easy.  Time will tell!

I hope all this helps.

86 Porsche 944T LS1 swap begins Empty pb adapter clearance

Post  smkn951 Thu Dec 12, 2019 6:44 pm

Hello ray,
thanks for the reply.
i see from the diagram that the clearance forward is .435. I measured mine and it's at .42. the original pilot bearing is still in and does not contact the pb adapter.
thank you again.
now onto the wiring....i'm rebuilding the original harness and will send of the ecm to be reprogrammed. bought the original harness with ecm from the guy i bought the engine from for 250. reprogramming and headaches are about to commence.
I have been reading up on the holley terminator X and seems like it'll prevent me from loosing my hair.
Anyone have them installed on their swap?
TIA

What do you mean by grommet style push rod? When i did mine, I left the push rod attached to the hydroboost and cut the end off and threaded it for the brake pedal clevis.

i read that there are two types of how the rod is secured to the piston. one is a grommet style in which it's pushed in and held in place by a grommet and the other is a stake type in which a crimp is made so the ball end of the rod doesn't pop out.. and i have the stake or crimped style and yep messed up that piece..the rod that you threaded is the rod i forcefully pulled out and ending up cracking the base where it sits..i took it apart and it's connected to the piston inside the hydro boost.
i think i may just get another junkyard piece and redo it and this time ill thread it instead of hammering it out....

86 Porsche 944T LS1 swap begins Empty test fit engine

Post  smkn951 Wed Apr 08, 2020 11:18 pm

good evening everyone,
just a little update, installed the cross-member spacers, got new bolt and additional washers for the front sway arm mounts.
installed the engine from the top and aside from having to push the engine back due to the short arm on the lift, i'd say it wasn't that bad.
also test fit the hydroboost and clutch cylinder. had to make room for the clutch cylinder due to it's length.
i think I may have to relocate all coil packs elsewhere.
Heres a video of the install.

86 Porsche 944T LS1 swap begins Empty drive shaft issues...help

Post  smkn951 Fri Apr 10, 2020 3:59 pm

hello everyone.
well, we managed to install the bell housing and torque tube in...seemed all was going too smooth...
upon further inspection.... I went to the rear and grabbed the shaft and spun it by hand.... I don't think I should be able to do this if the shaft is fully seated in the clutch correct?
I went to the front of the engine and manually turned over the crank and had my daughter see if the shaft in the rear moves, and it did but she was able to stop it....
I feel that the center driveshaft isn't going in all the way and seating in the pilot bearing.
what would cause this and what can I do?
I have a single piece bell housing that I got from eBay and made the required mods to fit the hydraulic lines....
please help, I don't want to give up on this but every day seems like there's more issues on this install.
thanks
Carl
