For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Hello Guys,

I was wondering if there is any info out there or any thoughts on running a transmission hooked to the bell housing on the engine and at the rear running a differential pumpkin with half shafts similar to the new camaro setup all while still using the stock 944 suspension? I know there would be some fab work but I am in the hunt for something that can be beat on without breaking. I also would like to push my car up to about 550whp. I ran the stock 944 transaxle for the first year at 400whp and last winter I bought a 5r turbo trans from a guy that promised it was good but shifting from 1 to 2 at the upper half of the rpm range I get a gear grind. I don't want to feel like I might break my setup every time I get onto the gas hard.

My Car info -
1983 944
4.8 LS turbocharged on 8lbs
5R turbo trans with NA 5th gear
2800 lbs with a half tank of fuel
255 Potenza rear tires

I still have this conversion in mind. Since I built my car I have had a center section from a Jag XJS (3.44 posi) and a aftermarket original Borg Warner Super T-10 w/ Nodular iron case and nickle gears.

Right now I have a G31 (924 turbo) transaxle with a European 4.125 ring and pinion. I had figured that if I trash the G31 I have these parts to swap in. It wouldn't be an easy swap because the tunnel is not wide enough for any kind of transmission. So it would take some fabrication there. You need to build a sub frame to mount the center section regardless of the center section you use. There was an article online somewhere where someone put a highly modified AUDI 5 cyl. turbo engine and I don't remember what transmission they used, in a 944 and used, i think, a center section from a Mazda. They cut the tunnel up to fit the trans. I didn't like what they did to close up the tunnel. They just made a cover that fit over the big hole.

My G31 has worked flawlessly since I began driving it so this swap never happened. Although I have been thinking about building a 383 to replace my 302 so if I do this I may need the swap.

the diff parts really isnt too hard, just need to do some fab work for the mounts. i would go with a ford 8.8 from an explorer, they are strong and have a ton of gear options. you can also get axle stubs for 930 cv joints, from there you can build axles with off the shelf parts.

putting the trans up front is going to be a bit of work as the tunnel has little room. with the 944 being a small car, building a tunnel for a trans is going to take a lot of room away from the passenger compartment.

myself, i like the 3rd option of the corvette transaxle and torque tube. sure, you have to cut up the floor, but its under the useless back seat, and you do need to mod the torsion bar tube and go to coilovers. in the end i dont see it being much different as far as the amount of work.

I do concur. As a guy that has a zo6 set up fits real nice.
