HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

1983 944 SBC Conversion Transaxle/5Spd Empty 1983 944 SBC Conversion Transaxle/5Spd

I posted this in anther location before finding this one which seems more appropriate.

Good Day Everyone

I am new to the forum and have a few questions. I went to look at a 1983 944 yesterday. It has a mild 355 SBC in it(maybe max 400hp). It has the stock 5spd and transaxle. The current owner did indicate it has some upgrades in the transaxle...I think he mentioned better axles. The clutch is to be a nice aftermarket unit.

I would be concerned about parts replacement if either the 5spd or transaxle needs serviced. Typically how much hp can these items handle before I need to be concerned?

Thanks,
Ed.

I have an '83 that is doing quite well with the stock numbers - thing is, what do you plan on doing with your car? I am autocrossing, and plan to track it this year and have no concerns about a transaxle failure. Now, on the other hand, if i were to take it to the drag strip....that would be another story.

Thanks for the reply...

This will be just a street car. I doubt it will ever see the track or even have a drag radial on it. But if I dont get too aggressive with the launch attempts and shifting I hope all will be ok. If I make the purchase, I would eventually upgrade to more hp maybe around 600hp pump gas.

i road race my two 944 V8 cars .
my LS7 car puts out well over 650 HP and the trans can not handle the HP so i installed a quaife 6 speed sequential into that car .
the other car i race is a SBC 350 with just over 400 HP and tork .
for the last 3 years i have been doing endurance racing with it for 2 , 4 , 12 and 24 hour events .
i run deferent trans depending on the track we are racing at . all the transaxles are bone stock units with just a lsd add only one out of the 3 we use is out of a turbo 944 all the others are from 1983 to 1985 944's .
they can take the hp and tork with out any trubble at all . we did blow out a halfshaft once two years ago coming out of the pit box but it was because the CV was no good and not because the axles are to small .
if your not johnny burn out the stock transaxles and half shafts will do you just fine .
