For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

I've been running 87 octane and getting around 24mpg. It's currently on a base tune. Once I get VSS working correctly (need to move it closer to the trigger wheel), I'll have lean cruise enabled and should see closer to 26mpg and 28mpg after some street tuning.

There are two spark tables, one for high octane and one for low. This is taken from HPTuners:

The VCM constantly looks up both High Octane and Low Octane spark tables and interpolates a value between the two tables based on the current Knock Learn factor. If the engine has been operating for a moderate time without any Knock Retard then Knock Learn is zero and the interpolation favors the High Octane table, if Knock has been detected then the interpolation will move towards the Low Octane table. During MAF failure the Knock Learn is set to maximum and the Low Octane table is used (HP Tuners speed density enhancements allow both spark tables to function).

The one thing that you do need to worry about is your compression ratio. The truck engines sit in the 9:1s, which should be fine for 87. The LS motors tend to run into the 10:1 (LS1 = 10.2:1?) area and may require at least 91 octane.

I'd only run premium in the LS1. That's all I use. With factory turbo gearing I only get around 22-23mpg on the freeway. With a NA 5th gear swap I'd probably get around 28mpg.

Just done a fuel consumption test, all town driving, 17 mpg.
Also did a short run on the Interstate, 80 mph with a Turbo tranny/NA 5th showed 3150 rpm.

I have to assume that the speedometer drive signal for the 944 and 951 is the same and that the PCM is giving an accurate rpm signal to the 944 Tach.

Where's that 6th gear?

With the NA 5th gear and turbo tranny you should be seeing quite a bit less than 3150prm. I see 3250 at 80 with the stock 0.85 turbo 5th gear..

Did my first extended freeway driving this weekend. Drove to Monterey and back, ~300 miles each way, and got 24 mpg. This is with the big 0.68 5th I installed. This included around 30-60 minutes of stop-and-go traffic each way. I'm pretty happy with that, considering I'm getting about 16 in around-town driving.

One of the Spec 944 guys gave me a NA tall 5th 0.73 gearset at the track this past weekend. Will try to get it installed soon...
