For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

If you look the crossmember is laying on the ground. It's missing the brakes and hubs so I can't put the wheels on.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Well I purchased an '86 944 turbo shell, sight unseen, a couple of days ago. It's supposed to be in good shape but it's missing engine/turbo, cross member, and rack and pinion. I was debating between replacing the turbo motor with another or doing an LS/LT swap. I think I have decided on an LS swap. Nothing against the LT motor but I like the idea of eventually having an aluminium motor and there's more and more development all the time.

I've talked to Eric a little bit and I think this a rough outline right now. Also, don't flame the noob too bad, I understand a lot better by seeing and doing than reading.

1. Getting a cross member so I can put the front back together enough to put on the trailer.

2. Since I gotta drive to Dallas to get the car anyways, get the LS1 conversion kit from TPC while I am down.

3. Motorwise - I found a dressed 5.3 motor for $500, I know I have to use an LS manifold. Anything else needs to be changed off the truck motors. If that 5.3 goes away I'd also take a 4.8. That way I can get the car up and running instead of waiting and waiting for my deal on an LS1. Then that truck motor would be going into my 98 4runner. I guess, do you guys think I should just wait for the LS I am going to install? Wouldn't replacing the 5.3/4.8 with an LS be a pretty easy swap.

4. Brakes - I would like keep the power brakes. I guess I'm not really understanding the options and the difference between the two and why it's needed. Pros/Cons to the solutions.
A. Hydroboost
B. Dual master cyls

5. Steering - Retaining the power steering would be nice. But I do need to get a new rack but if I managed to find a manual rack that would make things easier.

6. A/C - When I get back I'll have spent about 24 months in the freakin desert in the past 3 years. It's a must. Getting the A/C finally fixed in my truck too.

Besides TPC's swap kit what common items am I going to have to source? What motor should I be looking at just from an aceccories/serpentine layout?

I'm looking forward to getting this project started but hope to have it driveable within a few weeks of getting the pieces together.

Oh, and if anyone has a good LSx/5.3/4.8 source in DFW area or between Springfield, MO and there, I wouldn't be opposed to picking it up.

I would like to see someone do a 4.8 truck motor and see how high they could rev it with Z06 head and springs. It's like a short stroke version of the 5.3. I'm getting great gas mileage with the 5.3 and think a high-rev built 4.8 would be pefectly suited for the NA tranny (if you had one). You would need an LS1 intake or LS6....keep it drive by cable if you can.

There is nothing wrong with the 4.8s and 5.3s.

After I have the 5.3 LM4 running in my 944T, I will be looking at going with a built 4.8 or 5.3 with a flat plane crank. Rev that sucker to 10k. Twisted Evil

Going with the truck motors also gives you better options and can net cheaper gains. Instead of getting an LS1 and paying 300 for an LS6 intake, you are buying a truck motor for cheaper and tossing a 300 dollar LS6 intake on there. The LS1 intakes go around 100 dollars used as well. From there, you are looking at a fuel rail and different injectors (or follow what xschop did and run his aftermarket rail with stock injectors). From there, you also have a choice of throttle bodies which can be had online used for a decent price.

The accessories normally involve F-body stuff. Xschop was able to reuse the truck pulley with water pump spacers and brackets for the rest that seemed to work. For me, I found a cheap F-body crank pulley and a very cheap, new with thermostat, LS2 water pump. So with the water pump spacers, the LS2 water pump should line up. The A/C compressor will require the newer style motor mounts and plates, but that shouldn't be an issue if you are dealing with Eric to begin with.

The rest shouldn't be terrible either. The 944 V8 community is slowly getting closer to the final solution and we have been evolving for quite some time now. You just happen to be on the end of all of it.

Oh, and only buy a C5 manual bell housing. Razz

I also found the Wiki after I'd posted this.

So I don't need to be that worried about finding a 5.3 with all the accessories then if I am going to have to go to the f-body system anyways. I was reading something about running the stock 944 power steering pump with a custom bracket. I think that might have been from xshop's post, on rennlist, but I'm not sure. Also something about using the 944 crank pulley and swapping the accessory pullies on to the GM accessories.

So a few things on top of my head on top of the TCP kit if I get a 5.3.
1. C5 bellhousing, 2 piece if preferable
2. F body crank pully and serpentine set up
3. LS1/LS6 intake
4. 944 power steering pump and custom bracket(maybe?)

I figure I need less of a bank balance than putting a turbo motor in and then boosting it.

Just use the gm power steering pump and other accessories, they work and fit without any work.

I'll take your word on that then. I thought I'd read something about it pushing too much volume for the rack to handle.

Also, anyone have a link that would have the various LS accessory set ups? That's more for my truck swap.

Well my friend Kelli went to took the pics and will be e-mailing them to me later today. Apparently the sport seats are in pretty crummy shape but the dash has no cracks in it. I thought that was unusual for being a Texas car.

Option codes:
c03 341 383 387 395 425 454 650 946

Checked the codes on 944online. No LSD unfortunatly.

I am going with a 5.3L truck engine and found that 07-09 GM Gen IV Water Pump L92 6.0 5.3 6.2 LY6 fits without having to use spacers and all accessories line up. The 2010 Camaro W/P is the same except the price is a whole lot more.

Look in search, "Nailed It" for an idea for power steering using the truck accessaries and the Porsche power steering unit.

Added link for my photos in my original post.

It does have the cross member but no freakin hubs or brakes. I'm a little ticked about that. Also the seats are more torn up that I was expecting. Are the turbo hubs different? I guess I'll have to do a brake upgrade now anways.

I think ive read somewhere that the NA vs. Turbo hubs are in fact different ...... Quite sure that it was mike lindsey from lindseyracing because he sold me hubs to use with the 993tt big reds i bought from them. If you find you can use/need 87 NA hubs, i have a pair.

Barn fresh though eh?!?! Looks good actually!

Overall it doesn't look bad. I did some research after I posted this and it looks like the 86 Turbo had a unique hub. It's a beefier turbo hub but with the early offset.

Anyone know if I can use the hubs off a different vehical?

I was talking to a guy in Tulsa about the crossmember, he has a couple early 944 he's parting out. I think both were hit in the front but at least if I could get a couple of complete spindles so I can get the front together and on car on the trailer. Guys think that'd work?

Hope you didn't pay to much for that shell, There is going to be a lot of things you'll need. If it is the one I think it is, You'll be doing a lot of "Shopping" to find all the little parts to get it back together. Good luck.

We'll see if I overpaid or not. I think the LSx is the way to head just out of getting the car to run. If nothing else, I'll go ahead and buy the 89 NA that I was looking at and it'll get a turbo nose and rear spoiler and I'll part the rest.

I paid 700 for it but at the time it was supposed to have brakes too.

You can probably combine the two and have a few parts to sell, The shell of the turbo car is really nice,It has just been sitting in pieces for way too long. Hard to know if you'll get every nut and bolt to put it back together.

It will be interesting to go through. I just get a kick of the idea of driving down the interstate and all the dust blowing off of it.

Car title loan anyone?

FYI, let me save you time and money, the turbo nose will not fit a NA, the fenders and header panel around the lights are different. I researched that route and ended up using the IFC Racing wide body nose designed for the NA cars.

I can't really tell if you are. They're kinda hidden from sight under that front header panel. If you are do some searches around here to find out what they are using. Most people can use the stock 951 radiator without any problems though.

Yeah. I'd planned on using the stock radiator....if it's there. I think Kelli said she has some cell phone pics and I'll see if she remembered seeing one. Like you said, there's not a good angle. I was hoping someone could pick out something that would be visable.

From what I can tell its gone. Look at the pic of the radiator support in my N/A car and then the pic that shows the engine bay looking at the drivers side.

The little rubber thing in this picture is where the bottom of the radiator sits.

It looks like that brace that runs along the front should be the radiator support, and if it is your missing a radiator.
