For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Punched in the numbers between the stock 0.83 5th gear and the NA 0.73 5th gear and it looks like the NA gear drops rpm by 400-500 rpm at the same cruising speeds.

At 3000 rpm with 285-30-18 tires with the 0.83 gear you're going 78.8mph, with the NA 0.73 you're going 89.6mph, which you don't really hit till you're at 3500 rpm with the 0.83.

With the diesel 0.68 5th gear you're going 96.18 mph at 3000 rpm, which is pretty much a 600-700 rpm drop over the stock 0.83 ratio.

I have easy access to the NA 5th gear because none of the Spec 944 racers want it, so I think I'm going to swap it in and see what I think. They all want my stock 0.83 5th, but I'm going to hang onto it in case I don't like the bigger hole between 4th and 5th the NA gear will create.

Ya, I agree. The 0.68 drops your rpms about 200 more than the 0.73. I'm going to hold on to my 951 0.83 also.

I'm going to hold on to the rest of my diesel trans with the idea that if the 951 trans I have now ever frags, maybe I can swap in the rest of the diesel gears. The diesel 1st gear is the same as the 951 (3.60), but all the rest are progressively taller.

Probably could just swap in the whole diesel trans if I put some thought into it...

Not been on Interstate yet, my 88 NA with a Turbo trans and NA 5th gear was showing 2500 rpm at 60 mph. Tires are 255-40 17"

My Audi Diesel 0.68 5th is in and it fits and apparently works fine, although the trans is still out as I'm still in process of clutch, TT bearing, etc., etc...

Mike, from my research: the swappable 0.68 5th gear is in '80-'82 Audi 5000 Diesels w/trans codes: UF, MN, BMO, WV, UW, MO, MR, AAW, AAV, AAY, AAX, AMM, & AMN.

I saw more of these boxes at either All Auto Recycling (719) 683-9600 or Jerry's Foriegn (408) 993-9711, both up in the NW somewhere.

iirc, I found the boxes pretty easily through car-parts.net and then called the guys and had them check the trans codes.

Complete box. I thought about having them strip out the gear, but was advised against it by many here. And I'm glad I didn't try to go that route. Stripping out the gear isn't hard, but now that I've done it myself, it really isn't something I'd leave to the junkyard guys. The complete box was about $125 + 50 or so for shipping. Can't wait to get it on the open road!

If the Quattro box is an 016 box then it should all fit, google around for the info for the Quattro box.

Where on the Audi transaxles is the code we are looking for and what is the format of the entire code? Is it stamped on the top of the bell housing like the 944's are? I am definitely looking to get a .68 gear for my car. I already have the turbo with the n/a 5th but I run about 2200 at 70 and would like to bump it down a bit. I still have yet to find time to make myself a spreadsheet for this car but I have done it on others so I need to get down to it. I don't suppose anyone has any European contacts that could get he even taller gears??

Well, just to finish this up, the car is back together and the Audi diesel 5th gear gives me 2500 rpm at 70mph, vs the oem turbo 5th that was giving me about 3000 at 70mph.

Which makes me think the Audi gear I got is the same .73 that the 944 NA has. ([edit] Looks like the Audi gear is 0.68 after all, it just didn't drop my revs as much as I thought it would.)

Kind of a disappointment as I expected the Audi gear to be .68 and rpm's at 70mph to be in the 2250 range...

[edit 2/9/2015] So I just discovered that my speedo is reading 8-10 mph low, so I am running about 2250 rpm at 70 mph with the 0.68 Audi 5th gear, which is exactly what I was wanting! Luckily I discovered the speedo error before I got a speeding ticket...

In this configuration it would be 0.909. It looks pretty clear that there is more than a 4 tooth difference between those two gears.

I think I get it now, I need to compare the teeth between the two gears in the pic.

Looks like 38:26 to me, which = 0.68. (could possibly be 39:26 or 40:26, but those aren't ratios of any 016 Audi trans that I've been able to find.)

And the NA 0.73 5th is 37:27, which my gears in the pic clearly are not.

So I guess my Audi diesel 5th in the pic IS 0.68.

Just didn't drop my revs by as much as I thought it would...

[edit 2/9/2015] So I just discovered that my speedo is reading 8-10 mph low, so I am running about 2250 rpm at 70 mph with the 0.68 Audi 5th gear, which is exactly what I was wanting! Luckily I discovered the speedo error before I got a speeding ticket...

Aco, That sounds right. I double checked this morning commute. I have the 951 box with NA 5th and spin exactly 2600 RPM at 70mph. My rear tires are taller 285-35-18

I was killing time at the AC shop today, I got out my 944 Owner's Manual (printed 9/87) and was looking at the Power Train data. My car is a 1988 model.

It lists the 5th gear ratio for the 944, 944S and 944 Turbo as 0.829:1
The Axle ratio is 3.889:1 for the 944 and S, 3.375:1 for the Turbo

Did I waste my time changing the fifth gear in my turbo box for the 5th gear from my old NA box?
