HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.
Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin
For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.
When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).
After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

944 quattro??
anyone have any knowledge on converting a 944 to a quattro setup as seen on an audi 4000cs? i know that the 944 and the 80's audi's have some common attributes, but im very unfamiliar with audi's in general. i thought this forum may be the place to ask this question as this idea is a major conversion.

I would guess that you would need to push the engine forward at least 10 inches to get the front drive shafts to line up with the wheel centreline, NOT easy. Maybe use the front hubs from a MK1/MK2 VW, flip left and right.
Other than that, it should be quite straightforward.....

Re: 944 quattro??
i can definately see how there being enough room would be a major issue. i was thinking about how even the ls1 conversion, (or lt1) some people have dropped the crossmember a few inches. i wonder if by sinking the engine down a bit, along with manual steering rack, it could be possible to fit a quattro 016 gearbox as a front axle.

It could be possible to make a quattro one of these but you'd probably ruin a lot of the handling and bonuses of the car. If this was in the uk i'd have suggested looking into cosworth 4x4 engines and running gear as the driveshaft goes through the sump so the engine can sit back further.
If running an audi il5 engine it would have to sit too far forward and you'd struggle to shut the bonnet. A 1.8t 4 cylinder make this a bit easier but not much, I have seen one of these fitted to a 924 before and have seen a step by step but as yet not seen a quattro conversion

Re: 944 quattro??
if your going to do this with an ls engine, look at the trailblazer ss front differential setup, it bolts into the engine oil pan. however to do this you would have to run a transmission on the back of the engine. if you want a manual transmission it becomes more difficult as you need to adapt the trailblazer awd transfer case to whatever manual you choose. also keep in mind having to cut the floor up to fit all this, modify the engine cradle, front hubs, etc, and figuring out a rear diff to replace the transaxle.

Re: 944 quattro??
If one were to actually do this, there's no reason you'd need to stick with a single donor vehicle. My friend converted a car from RWD to AWD using parts from many different vehicles based on what would work where. The transfer case is from a Bravada, the front diff is from an S10, the rear diff is from a Mustang Cobra (the IRS version, not live axle), the oil pan is custom with a shaft running through it. He's using a T56 with parts from 4 different vehicles and an adapter he made to bolt it to the transfer case.
I can't think of a single vehicle where it would make any sense to lift the entire drivetrain and put it into the 944.
