HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Hey Kevin, I can send you the billet mount I made for the 928 to see if you can incorporate it. I have a few spares. It mounts further back between the intermediate housing and differential using the 2 longer 10mm bolts and has extra space to drill more mount holes....

New convert under way - Page 17 Empty trans

Post  kevin924kevin Tue Feb 16, 2016 11:12 am

Rob, let me see what kind of room i have to work with. What would be great info right now is what is the measurement from the back of the vertical floor pan to the axle center. I want to make sure I don't need to slot my x member to move it all forward. Also if anyone knows the measurement from the underside of the rear frame to center of axle. I want to make sure the trans is not sitting to high. As it sits right now I have about an inch from the under side of the 924 trans/gas tank support to the top of my trans.

Mounts on top. And you can add simple steel brackets to connect it to bottom bolts too.

From what I see, I think the mount will be just in front of the carrier. This will allow a new cross tube at the shock mounts. I will post a pic of the templates I have made in there locations and see if this is good or if I need adjustments.

Rob, do you have a pic of it installed so I can see if it will work. My stubs go in on Wed to be cut down. Thank you again for the info on the weekend.

You can see where I am looking to mount in this pic. 3 bolts down each side. A bushing on top of each mount, and the tube will have the female ears dropping down for the bushings. Thoughts or suggestions.

Ok. In this case just go with what you've got. 3 better than two.

Awesome progress bud and great pictures... I do see similarities in our thinking, although I have no plans on gutting the whole trunk area so my setup will definitely be different. Glad to see one of us has made some substantial progress... work is just keeping me so busy lately I havent had much time to do anything huge on mine.

Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing!

Yep I plan to do the same once I am closer to where you are... I dont want to share too many specifics etc until its all made in metal and proven dimensions etc. No point in giving out unproven data.

Have you looked into those DSS Inner CV adapters for the Getrag? Pretty sure thats the route I am going to go instead of using that C5 Inner Tri-Lobe. The Tri-Lobe would work, but I really like the idea of having an axle with 4 matching CVs that could be easily replaced or reproduced.

Also I think a spherical heim/spring plate conversion is the way to go... I modeled it up and its not too hard to fabricate. If youre interested I will share some 3D model pictures of that... the dimensions arent 100% but they are damn close. At the very least it shows proof of concept...

Any info we can share is always good. I go tonight to have my stubs cut. I am hoping that he will do my trans mount plates as well, then I can finish the trans mount.

Ok when I get home from work tonight I will post the spring plate conversion setup I was looking into going with. It would allow more toe adjustment... although thats not as important as additional camber adjustment. Somehow I want to incorporate additional camber adjustment into the trailing arm mount/brace. Havent made it that far yet though... just food for thought.

Ok so here is my rough version of it... by no means are these dimensions final. Nothing here is set in stone... just something I was tinkering with. I want something that utilizes the original torsion housing and a modified oem spring plate. If need be a new spring plate could be made and very well may have to. The whole thing could done a few different ways too... I made about 3 different versions... one of which would just be a puck welded into the torsion housing... with a threaded hole to mount the rod end on... that isnt a bolt in option though. Many ways to skin a cat... this is just one and I liked this version because someone could bolt it right in with the proper spring plate.

Please forgive my poor annotation skills, I slapped these DWGs together real quick so you had a better idea of dimensions. I am by no means an expert with this program, I just use it and teach myself as I go.

The "pucks" as I call them, would sandwich together with an off the shelf 7/8-9 4.5" bolt. I also made it so washers could be used under the head of the bolt to tighten the grip up or loosen the grip on the spherical rod end. Its modeled to use a 7/8" x 3/4" Rod End with roughly 2" long 3/4-10 thread.

Here are the main images below... you can view and download all of the images here [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

If anyone wants the DWG or 3D Models (or another requested format) I would be happy to email or upload/send them to you so you can tinker with them yourself.

The exact rod end is KMX14 located here... [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The important thing to remember is the spherical through hole is 7/8" and the width on the Spherical Bearing is 7/8". You could easily remodel these to use a similar 3/4" rod end KMX12 if needed.

You will need to cut metal away from inner steel Torsion Tube Housing where the 2" long thread from the rod end protrudes and connects to the spring plate. I dont remember exactly how much material needed to be removed but I believe it was about 3/8". A small amount needs to be removed from the aluminum outer housing... I believe about 1/8"-3\16".

Couple pictures for reference to the area I am talking about clearancing. Had to source the second picture online because I didnt have a good angle on that area.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Like in the picture above you will need to add the threaded plug/nut to the existing spring plate. I am not certain but it might also be possible to order an off the shelf VW spring plate conversion plate... like these and use or modify it. I believe its 3/4-10 thread though so you would have to take that into account. Could be an off the shelf option though if the pucks were redesigned for use with a 3/4" rod end instead of the 7/8".

This kit has the offset spring plates for VW arms. I believe our spring plate is offset as well, but I dont know for certain. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Or use these straight versions... once again, havent tested... so still some things to iron out. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I planned on getting some water jet cut locally once I was ready to move forward with this portion of the project. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Nice write up. Thank you. I think for now I want to finish my tt the way it sits. I want to have it moving under its own power as soon as I can. With all the extra work I still have to do I need to keep my focus and stay with my game plan. Please keep posting updates on the design I like where your heading.

No Problem, happy to share... but yeah I came to the same conclusion as well, there are far more pressing areas of the build that need to be finished first. Thats why I havent proceeded any farther with it than conceptual design in my spare time.
