For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Does anyone make a carbon fiber hood for the 944?

I do not know of anyone right now, although I am thinking of doing a fiber glass with a small scoop at the from edge. Just enough to give the clearance that we need for the LT1 intake boot and Throttle Body.

Any ideas on what it should look like would be appreciated

GT Racing sells one for $800, though it doesn't list the weight in their catalog. You'd think they would do that considering one of the more important reasons for switching to FRP/CF is to save weight. Anyways, too expensive for me, so I've just cut a hole in my hood and will be fitting this:

I just bought their FG version and it weighs 14.3 pounds so maybe a bit lighter since CF is stronger than FG so less is needed? But the original steel hood is 40 pounds so 14 is pretty good by itself. The fit and finish (gelcoat) is perfect.

Carbon Credits Empty CF Hood

Post  xschop Wed Jun 10, 2009 7:20 am

Does your FG hood have good strength in the molding corners and bolt right up like a stock hood.
14 pounds is a good wt.
While we're on the subject, could the sunroof of these cars be done in CF?

I have a guy that said he would make a custom run if I can get 5 purchased. He said the pricepoint would be around $600, and he'd need a perfect steel hood for the plug mold. He is in Portland, OR and Phoenix, AZ. It would be hood pins only though, as he said he'd just use a standard base with no hood latch reinforcement. I can vouch for his work personally.

If we can get 5 people in on it, it could be a very valuable addition to the community.

His website to see what he can do... He also plugged my widebody fenders form GTracing, so he can duplicate those if anyone's interested.

I have to admit though- I do not have any financial stake in him or his company, nor do I desire to get in the middle. A close friend of mine, however, is an employee there so I'm not 100% separated from them. I just felt everyone should know in case this goes forward. Don't want anything to be hidden, accidentally or otherwise.

Carbon Credits Empty Fabbin

Post  xschop Thu Jun 11, 2009 12:04 pm

I have a composites fabricator coming over to the house Saturday for some fender work on a custom bike I did for a daily driver. I will be discussing the hood structure in depth with him And fenders. I wish I had a turbo nose to make a CF one without the foglights. I will discuss pricing for each item. I will let everyone know the details. I saw that some 99? cars had CF hoods in the $450 range....

Very strong! It has bracing on the underside similar to the stock hood unlike AIR's version. It bolts right up but does not have strut tabs. I guess good working hood struts would be too much for a FG hood. Neutral

The sunroofs are already fiberglass but a more composite type of FG was used. Really a weird type of plastic/FG there and its heavy. GTR sells a FG version of the sunroof and lindsey racing has a delete panel available. I would think a CF sunroof would be really awesome!! I think I would HAVE to buy one, but they are pretty salty yet.

Carbon Credits Empty took a look

Post  xschop Thu Jun 11, 2009 10:14 pm

I just came from the garage to look at the hood. I was just about to ask if the FG hoods still retained the hood struts or not.
I was wondering if the CF could be laid around the corners and then removed. Afterwards cut the sheet metal top off and bolt/fasten back to the frame?

Carbon Credits Empty CF

Post  xschop Tue Jun 16, 2009 9:20 am

Had a lengthy discussion and sealed a deal for him to do my Streetfighter's CF work. While there we discussed doing a CF hood for the 944. Basically, if it is possible to remove the top hood skin from the frame. I see that it is just rivet welded on the sides to the skeleton. If it can be removed, I wounder how much this weighs?
The plan would be to lay the CF, afterwards peel up the CF from the hood top, remove the top sheet metal ( I think it can just be cut away @ 1" from the edge) and fasten CF right back on. This will cost @ $350 (as opposed to $1100 hood copy) and still have the frame strength and all hood attachments points and Hood hydraulic struts.

Any input is welcome...........PORH

I can make any parts that we need out of FG. I just need good parts to pull molds off of. I have everything needed right in my shop. What do you think I am making the head light buckets out of? Cool
I can make a light weight FG hood, but it would have to be a pin on style or I could hinge it, but it would have to have a prop rod. If you need it we can get black glass, looks kind of like CF but not as light or strong.

Dawgz83948, how do I get a set of those wide fenders?

Carbon Credits Empty Turbo Nose

Post  xschop Sun Jun 21, 2009 9:17 am

I want a FG or CF nose shaped like the Turbo minus the Turnsignals and foglights.
I wonder how much weight could be dropped by doing FG hood, fenders, and nose?
