HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

5.3L or not? Empty 5.3L or not?

I have access to a complete engine from a 2000-2006 Suburban. All accessories included for $700. Would this be a good engine to put in a 944? Should I just continue to look for an all aluminum LS-1?

You can probably find something cheaper. I found my LM4 (aluminum block 5.3L) for 500. No accessories or starter, but did come with engine harness, intake, injectors, crank pulley, truck water pump, and a couple of other worthless bits. Most of that gets changed anyway, so you are still looking at a decent amount extra past the original investment. If it's an LM7 or another iron block version you are after, somewhere between 250-500 should easily be possible. GM made like a million of these motors.

Check out the following thread for more incite around the 5.3L and truck based awesomeness:

5.3L or not? Empty 5.3L or not?

Thanks for the link & write up.

I have been looking for the LS-1 complete swaps and they seem to be in the $2000-$3000 range. I like the weight savings of the aluminum blocks but this engine and I assume that it is a cast iron block with aluminum heads. What I thought good about this engine is that I could get the entire set up, engine, all accessories, wire harness, o2 sensors, exhaust manifolds, computer, absolutely everything for $700.

Thought it would be a rather good investment even if I needed to change some of the items to fit into the 944 engine compartment such as the intake to LS-1 intake and find or fabricate mounts for all the accessories and still come out okay on the initial price.

Don't know much about the LS series engines so this is a learning curve and all the input and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Is there anything else I need to think about? __Thanks,

Tehone

So what car do you want to put this into.

Year, (NA, Turbo, S2,?)

The 5.3 is a good engine, keep looking for the Aluminum one for the weight.

try [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to search the US salvage yards for some. I found the posted prices are easily negotiable. Especially today. Don't tell them what you need it for, they all think Porsche owners are made of money.

what state are you in? If you are in California, you can not put a truck enigine in a passenger car.

I have a 1984 944 N/A, automatic. I am changing out the auto at this point and it has been a learning experience but I am down to the transaxle left on the list .....I think. Thanks for the forum invite.

I do not reside in California and thanks for the info I did not know about truck to passenger no-no's. I am in New Mexico.

After reading in 944v8s "Converting the 944 to V8 Power" when using the 5.3L I need to change out to the LS-1 intake. Will I also need to change to the LS-1 fuel rails and injectors as well? I didn't read this in the article but I am not familiar with the difference in intakes. Somewhere I read that the electrical connectors to the fuel injectors are different between the LS-1 and truck injectors. Will I need to get the LS-1 injectors or just use the adapters that I have found to exist?

Check my thread "nailed it" it shows how I used the truck injectors (multec-2) with the LS1 intake by using 1/2" - 3/4" shoulder bolt spacers on an aftermarket fuel rail.
