HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Still beating on the LS1 blower 944 - with video!

Post  Michael B. on Tue Oct 12, 2010 5:57 pm

Okay, again I went AWOL but I still think of you guyz now & then. I tried to send our (past) illustrious leader (GT1SCCA) a message or two now & then but they all seem to fall on deaf ears.

So years have past... And I have put mile-after-mile on my 944 with LS1 and the Magunson blower. Great miles. Track, street, drag racing... Just a little update: Still no tranny issues. Cool

So here is the latest video! king

Check it out and enjoy your hybrid!

Glad to see you're still at it! Drop a note if you want to get to the bike races at Elkhart next spring. Aren't you using some aftermarket half shafts? How are they holding up? What kind? Rock on!

Yeah man!

Good to hear your still around too. Axles are those special GKN's I had produced. They still look like the day I installed them!

Its a great car. People always are amazed by it. Plus now with the bigger brakes (M030) it sorta stops.

Nice Vid. Do you drive it on the street?
What engine mods & what Clutch setup and Brake Booster if any? And uprights or cradle mount, X-member spacers affect bump steer?
Thanks for sharing the Vid.

Oh my. Lots-o-questions.

Well I am an old timer that built this thing myself and did a step by step photo log on the old Hybrid site. Its out there somewhere, every photo, from obtaining the donor car to smoking its tires.

I have put lots of street miles on it, made lots of YouTube vids with it, and tracked it when the schedule allows. I was pretty active when I built it then just drove it and played with it making appearances now & then on line and playing with my other cars.

The details are in some Gallery, maybe here?

Michael,

I had one question regarding your half shalfs. I just purchased a new set of the stock ones from napa. I know if I am too rough I am sure they will not hold up for long. I remember you writing up something before on yours, Do they still produce them or are they a custom item?

Sherman tank axles.

Post  Michael B. on Wed Oct 13, 2010 4:57 pm

I had them (GKN) interested in providing them for our application for a little while. They even brought a display piece for me to use at the SEMA show in Vegas. But once I started to try and actually sell them LOADS of V8 944 guys and big 951 turbo gents bailed on me. I think out of all the guys who said they were interested only 1 bought.

So production was halted. But they are a w e s o m e. Sherman tank axles. I love you

Here is a link from Tony Garcia's site. I dont know how old this info is but there are p/n's.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

You can find them on Lindsey racing website. Very, very expensive.

I recall talking with Lindsay years ago... They said "we are not going to carry them" and I had not seen them on their site since. Plus, if you look at my part number MS13HS002-5 its not in the pedestrian catalog anyhow.

You may be out of luck if you ever want to do them. Plus at $500 each (wholesale) you may not be interested. But take it from me, they are fantastic.

I see the turn away, but it seems like everything I am putting in this car cost a good chunk of change. If I have problems with my stock set I will have to research some alternatives. Thanks for the info.

Hey Michael, good to see you again. The supercharger is the last item in my long list of mods, way too much invested in this project and I haven't even driven it yet! Where did you source the hood, I seem to remember it was from RH on the old board, but would like to know. Kudos to your son, great video, please keep it coming. I'm off to the skimpy garage to finish my 5th gear swap, and hopefully install my Guards ATB diff today.

Hey Mike!

Good to see your wrenching even today.

Yes it was/is a RH hood. They source it from some other vendor who makes a few each year. You know the hood would not have been needed with a procharger, or other hair drier blower, but I just HAD to do the top mount set up. Anyhow - just food for thought.

Your car will be serious with all your efforts. You will flip out how good it is that 1st 100 miles or so. Its nuts how "right" this swap is.

I will tell my son you sent the kudos. Cool

I talked to the guy from Raxles, and he mentioned that you just "move the fuse", as you strengthen the axles (move fuse to the transaxle). Good to hear that your tranny is still surviving.

I like to road race, got rid the of the RH LT1, as I couldn't see how a NA would survive road racing with manual brakes, without a ton of work. Actually, you and I had the same car, the 16v S model. hmm....under the sleve, are you running a power setup, or what are you doing for brake master cylinder. I took my manual cylindered higher brake point master cylinder 88 944S 16v RH LT1 kit out for a spirited drive, and lets say, that is why I sold it, and got the z06. Hated the brakes. Even if I liked them, I thought that racing it would cook them....

I bought a z06 and it loves the track, but its 3100lbs and 2 seats (huh?), so I am selling it, and going to come back to a 944.

Since you brought up brakes. Were your manual brakes a dual circuit or a tandem master cylinder setup?

Brakes?

Who needs 'em? They just slow you down! Razz Twisted Evil Wink

I usually unbolt that pedal & toss it out, its just added weight! What a Face What a Face

Okay-Okay. I have done a lot of fiddling with the brakes. But nothing serious. 1st I started with the removed brake booster & repositioned pedal pivot with the stock set up... Sans blower. That required a early move to slotted rotors... Then I thought "hmmm, supercharger?.." then ducted air to the rotors through the fog light holes and bought a set of the Willwood bolt on front four piston calipers. I took that to the track and promptly broke a front rotor in half - at 125MPH into a 90 degree corner. Sweet.

So I then added rear 951 four piston calipers and rotors. It felt pretty good on the street (I could lock them up if needed) but it was a death trap (read: just about right).

So by then the blower was a reality and better brakes were a requirement. I swapped over to M030 hubs / spindles / rotors and upgraded to 993 Big Blacks up front. That and the 951 calipers in back do get it stopped. But the lack of a power brake system does slow the lap time a bit as I brake early without it. The car is only 2700 pounds so I don't need a lot, but I know I could be much faster on the road course with a boosted system. However I feel that it would not be any advantage on the street or at the drag strip - so it has not been a priority past what I have done to date.

Today's "Two guys garage" on Speed talked of a hybrid boosted brake system from a newer Ford Mustang in a LSM3 project. I am always on the look out for something but I am not really shopping. Too many cars, too little time I guess.

Edit: Oh, and always with the stock master. Never needed any else... Yet.

I Bought a set of those wilwoods when I ran my manual car and the guy there told me not to run them with slotted rotors, due to them get too hot from the caliper pressure and shattering. But they wer nice in just a regular ls1 street car.

I know Eric (admin) has installed two hydroboost systems for customers and the both seem to love it. I have acquired the main parts and am waiting to get back on the road to go to Texas and have Eric install them for me.

I did see in a Summit magazine an aftermarket hydroboost master. I guess alot of people are liking fords concept of it.
