For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

steering shaft... Empty steering shaft...

Post  aixgelo78 Sat Oct 09, 2010 1:54 pm

So, I figure Id get alot done today, and continue working on the steering rack. Well, I got the rack mounted, when I started to install the steering shaft, this is what I found.....

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Im assuming that I need to extend this?
I converted from power to manual. I am using the manual shaft, which is longer than the power one.
Ive tried to search, but found no info, I dont even remember reading a thread about having to extend the shaft.
Is it just my luck I got a wrong shaft?
i am using 1/2" drop down spacers.....

TIA
chris

I have a manual shaft here. Measure the shaft alone (not the U-joints) and Ill go measure mine.

I just measured my intermediate steering shafts. The power shaft is 15.25 ish and the manual shaft is 16.25 ish. See how long the one you have is. That is with the U joints.

You guys are great.....!!! I just measured mine and its about 9 3/8"....So i know I have the right shaft

Do I extend it 1/2" or is it actually more due to the geometry?
If I remove the spacers, how much modification do I have to do to my hood? Im trying to avoid a hood scoop.....

I know others have used a manual rack with spacers and they didn't lengthen the intermediate shaft. Why won't this fit?

Thats what Im trying to figure out.....I try to search prior to working on a section of the car, Ive read nothing that stated anything about extending the intermediate shaft. So when I bolted it up, it caught me by surprise. Does anybody modify their intermediate shaft when they use spacers for power steering?

Check my gallery, I used 1.25" spacers and did surgery on the steering shaft.
On my next swap I'm building a telescoping shaft. I have the exact spline dims for our cars and found quality u-joints that are more compact than the factory ones. What strange is our steering shafts are clocked WRONG from the factory.

make sure that you didn't push the u joint too far onto the upper threaded shaft that comes out of the firewall...just an idea but if you pushed it in too far it could change the geometries enough to make it look like you need to lengthen the intermediate shaft. Also, double check all of your mounting stuff to make sure everything is straight and true and you didn't miss a bolt or something like that

Checked my 8g Flash drive....
944 steering rack and column spline pattern is NOT metric...spindle maker probably did them LOL
Anyways 11/16" x 40 spline
I found this part # and you can get a telescoping DD shaft and bolt it all right up. IIRC, even a 1/2"
X-member drop is cutting so close to being able to get the U-joint thru-bolts to fit on the top coloumn and rack indentions......
Tele shaft....It's on my list...

Trying to get some Guru points LOL.
So are you guys saying the 15.5 and 16.5 dims are end-to-end on the factory 944 steering shafts including the square U-joints? I never measured mine at that time-point, just busted out the hack saw then machined that 1.25" lock spacer. Then Nuke-Proofed it with a welder.

Yes, end to end with the square U-joints. Not a super accurate measurement hence the -ish, but close enough to see the manual shaft is 1" longer.

when you chop the shaft don't forget to take into account the hacksaw or chopsaw blade width. Very Happy

Because usually, when you drop the steering rack 1/2", the U-joints on the shaft will take up the distance change in their angle (less severe at bottom U-joint, more sever at top U-joint).

It is strange that in his pic looks to be 1" off and not 1/2"?

Probably just the angle he's holding the shaft.

So, maybe the Ujoint is just tight or binding at the firewall? I had one the was tight that I thought had a full range of motion. After spryaying some lube on it the motion was much greater.
