HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Which gearbox? Empty Which gearbox?

Post  Juramalt Sun Sep 05, 2010 4:02 pm

Hello, And thanks to whoever activated my account. Lots of interesting info' on here.
I have a good gearbox but it's not the turbo one. Will it be up to the job? (Maybe with an LSD) Are the drive shafts up to it or is the box the weakest link? Box will be the 018 one from a 1987 Lux. Good turbo boxes are thin on the ground here. And very expensive to rebuild. If that box will do then is it worth replacing/upgrading the driveshafts to the larger Cv from the late turbo S/S2? OR is the box itself the weakest link?
Anybody done a RHD conversion yet? Was wondering about steering shaft/exhaust clearance.

What do you mean by RHD conversion?

ah, I wouldnt know about right hand drive conversion. I know that even in other RHD manual cars, they still have the same shift pattern as the LHD do. So the first gear is still to the left. the rest of it might be in the same spot as far as shift linkage goes on the trans

I think he is talking about converting a RHD car. I've not seen it done before, but I am relatively new to the conversion community.

From what I've been reading the box is the weakest link in the N/A cars. If you have to use a N/A box get some solid motor mounts and reinforce it to make it a little more beefy. I think some people are using N/A boxes on the LT swaps with some success.

911 and Porche World, a UK magazine published an article on the RHD to LHD swap. Unless the car is absolutely perfect, or has some strong sentimental value, it would be best to find another donor.

Hey thanks for the replies guys. Sorry not making myself plain. I'm in the UK so car is Right Hand Drive. Only difference will be the steering shaft & maybe some hydraulics from the clutch. I will try & add a photo so you can see then maybe you will know what I'm talking about. Car has a great rot free body which isn't easy to find over here as they chuck loads of salt on the roads & even Porsche's rust eventually. Read in the FAQ that the N/a box usable but wondered if anybody had blown one up yet or if it's the drive shafts that are weaker. I have to replace my box anyway as the original is shot & it''s taken me a couple of years to source a good one. Don't think I could find a 951 box that didn't need rebuilding so it's either that or the vette box. Right now trying to work out if this conversion is doable & how much it's going to cost. So any input from you guys is very welcome! Very Happy [img][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][/img]

Thats weird, where is the brake cylinder? I figured they just swapped the firewall around on right hand drives.

Brake servo & mater cylinder same as yours. (Sorry booster. Wink ) But what do you think about clearance for the headers?

It looks like you might be able to get away without doing too much to it. In the case that you do though its good to be able to fab something or know someone that can. I'm assuming your looking to put in a LSx?

I think the only big concern would be getting the headers made reverse of our headers.

The other thing that comes to mind is possibly the uprights would be switched too, but I am not sure on that one myself.

As far as everything else you should be good. Even when installing a LS motor in the LHD models there is that much clearance where the battery area is. So your right hand drive shouldnt be and issue as that goes.

Thanks for that. Think I will have to modify the headers myself rather than buy a set already done. The engine fit isn't really what worries me. But getting the brakes right & having a reliable gearbox.
My box is out at the moment so probably nows the time to fit the strengthening plate & new output bearings. Do you guys run with an LSD or stock?? Are you using stock drive-shafts or upgrading to S2/Late turbo S spec. (Bigger Cv's) I need 4 new cvs anyway & the difference in price is small.
Don't have a workshop so will have to pay for workshop time. Will need all the parts together before starting & then go for it in a couple of days. Plan to do gearbox first. Then brakes/suspension. Then drop the engine in last. Yes I'm after fitting an LS2. 350 to 400HP
Have a friend who runs an LS2 with 650HP so thats a bonus as he know his way around the engine at least. My stock engine is well down on power & the prospect of spending 2000$ on it to make 200HP isn't too appealing. Not when less than that will buy a good LS2!

sounds great. Not sure on the brakes as far as your setup goes, I am running a stock Master cylinder and have a turbo brake setup on the turbo car.

if running n/a the willwood 4 piston brakes are great upgrade.

I am putting a reinforcement plate on my non/lsd turbo 5spd and stock 86 cv axles. I know that will work on the streets. But if racing you will have to ask someone else.

Thanks, Looking at ordering Greggs 016 plate. Will stick with stock driveshafts then. Just for road use. This is my daily drive.

Eric (admin) has some plates too, they look great and are properly machine. I have one myself and I got it that same week I paid for it. I would ask him if he has any left.
