For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

cv joint axles Empty cv joint axles

Post  dallas Wed Sep 09, 2009 11:28 am

I remember a while ago , someone on one of these sites developed a tranny brace that helped stop the dr. side cv joint breakage. Has anyone heard anything as to its long term success? I think the guy drag raced it. Seems these axles don't stand up to much abuse.

cv joint axles Empty Transaxle torque bar

Post  968gene Wed Sep 09, 2009 12:09 pm

I spoke to someone who is running a transaxle torque bar for his street/track car. How much interest is there in having one? I will be doing this for my track car. If interested, let me know so that a batch can be made. xs, any interest on your part? I can get pics and dims to start the process.

With enough power you'll still break the CV, I broke the cage on one just giving someone a test ride! Shocked

I'd be interested as well. I've got a solid transaxle mount on mine, but I'm just not convinced that a second brace is not needed. Would rather over engineer it.

Yeah, throw it out there an let it be mulled upon. It may be possible to just make a simple threaded rod with a heim joint on both ends, one attached at the mount, the other to the frame?

Aluminum rod threaded at each end with wrench flats, similar to a KLA strut brace.

I have a pic of the brace that I saw a while ago. It's pretty easy to make. However , its on a car that that looks like a track car. I think the muffler in its stock location might be a problem. At least it seems that way on mine. I'm gonna try again to post it in my gallery. It doesn't seem to want to post. I keep getting a 312 none of your pictures have posted, after I hit save. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Here are a few pictures (fabricator unknown). we should concentrate on the passenger side to avoid the muffler. two brackets and a rod. fairly straight forward. xs?

I didn't know we had a seperate topic for this . I just posted it on the ls site since it is an ls conversion. Thanks for putting where it belonged. I'm gonna try and post the picture I have. Tried but I guess the file is too big. The pic is 900 kbs maybe thats why it won't upload. BTW thats a nice setup. It clears the muffler.

Since my topic is cv joint axles, does anyone know a supplier of gkn motorsports axles for our cars?

Your topic is CV joints, but your original post was about the trans bracket Laughing

If the trans bracket solves the problem, why investigate (and pay for) mega axles???

Well I snapped an axle yesterday. It snapped right at the end of the spline on right next to the collar. Most guys say we take out the inner cage of the cv joint correct? The thing is I've never pulled a hole shot. This was just a half throttle excursion from a roll in first gear. Maybe it was a defective axle, there was a porosity spot just off center. I will post a picture of it tonight. The cage was fully intact. I'm supposed to be 350hp and 365 tq. Some are way above that here. I pm'd Michaelb, but haven't heard back. His axles were "driveline motorsports" I heard they are expensive.

Tell me; was this the drivers side?
If so, are there marks in the center of the concaved section of the outer drive spindle? Also is the end of the shaft spline, outer, peened over?

When the transaxle moves over to the drivers side, under load, one of two things happens.
1. The CV's compress(plunge) and the cage limits further movement and will usually break because of the axial force.
2. The CV's compress(plunge) and the end of the splined shaft will contact the concaved section of the outer drive spindle. <== I had this on my car when it was still a Turbo; it was reduced by making a solid mount.

The solid bar should eliminate these two problems.

930 CV's have more plunge, operating angle and strength than the 944 (Type 4) style CV's, but they are 108mm in diameter with a larger bolt circle.....I have found an off the shelf solution for the outer spindles but no solution for the inner drive flanges

I posted pic's in my gallery of the axle. They're a little blurry but you'll get the idea. I'm thinking defect.

If you guy's can get me some good pictures of the brackets I can make them. The rod and hardware should be off the shelf type stuff.

Why not just fill in the mount with urethane? I hope that's what you guys are talking about. Check McMaster with part # 8644K11. There are people on RL that track their 944s and have yet to have this problem. 30-40 dollars later should have a solid mount in your hands.

Is that your mt? Zoom out a little. Napa has an adjustable bar with 2 heim joints. The brackets will have to be made up. I like the one in the above pics. But is that crossmember stong enough? Mine is thin guage stamped steel. Gonna try and make brkts. Oh btw ,heard back from gkn motorsports, about axles. Told me my letter was forwarded, and wanted to know yr, and model. Let you know when I do.

cv joint axles Empty trans bracket

Post  968gene Tue Sep 15, 2009 7:08 am

Solidifying the mount is only 1/2 the issue. The bracket triangulates the trans and that is what we need to keep the entire unit from compressing the driver's side CV joints. I like the trans to crossmember rod and brackets. This looks like the easiest fix.

this is interesting. Something that I did was that I had both the center trans mount and the early outer mounts on the transaxle. I also filled all the rubber mounts with the 3m window weld. I have blowup up the ring and pinion without breaking any CV's!

As and FYI, I put down over 560ft lbs to the wheels too!
