HOW TO DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH.

Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:56 pm by Admin

For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

Intake Idea Empty Intake Idea

Post  Ender751 Tue May 18, 2010 9:43 am

I haven't started my conversion yet. But i've been thinking of the intake lately. I don't want to pull air from under the hood if possible. I was thinking of using Lindsey's header panel (http://www.lindseyracing.com/LR/Parts/944S5HEADER.html). See the second pic of the red car? You can see the intercooler from the turbo charger through the header panel. What if that were the air filter. Something like this (http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=RA-072V) but a similar size to the opening and able to pull air through the front instead that piece of metal.

If the hood latch were removed and the head lights were modified to non-flip up there would be very little intake tubing and it would be straight the whole way to the filter. And it would pull cool air from in front of the car.

Has anybody thought of this? Is there a reason why this wouldn't work that I am missing?

Of course that's the easy way.

But to remove the hood latch you have to go with hood pins, and converting away from popup headlights means about $500 out of your pocket AND a decrease in lighting (or you can spend another $400 for projectors to get the light back).

HAHA. Not as original as I thought. I'm just surprised that NOBODY has done this. Especially since skywalker has already gone the hood pin route and more than one person has done the headlight buckets already.

Could you not just use the factory vent which feeds air into the space that the intercooler used to live in? it worked for me and others. Money saved could be used elsewhere...

Absolutely. I just thought it looked meaner with the filter taking up a bunch of space right there on the front.

I hadn't seen anybody plumb there's where you have. Most all I have seen are pulling air from right behind the headlight and that's what I wanted to avoid.

There are quite a few that have done what you're describing. It's just not very common because ....well, you're talking about $1000 to get a slightly better air intake!

There is even one person who used a giant flat air filter and made a large air box in the intercooler section of the car, where the air going through the nose panel would hit the filter directly. (Although, to be honest, the Turbo guys all swear that the opened-up nose panel does absolutely nothing for air flow).

Here's a bad picture of how i did mine:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It squeezes between the hood and the headlight bar, but unfortunately it's only a 3" pipe. I run out of air around 5700rpms! That's all the opening will really accomodate. My next intake will be behind the headlight, where i should have just put it in the first place... I doubt i'll see a noticeable difference in IAT's.

My car, too, has trouble breathing past 5,500 rpms

Might be because of the intake, although, I think it's more because I need to upgrade the T/B, intake manifold, and heads from OEM to something nicer aftermarket Smile

Porch, instead of moving the air supply, make holes in the header panel. op the place for air, not move it. when you open it with a couple holes, better air flow, higher rpms, and might be happier than moving it. dont forget you are trying to get 18 to 20 psi through a crack that is 1/4 inch thick.

Ghostcloak:
Are you LS, or LT? The stock LS top-end stuff is good to ~6500rpms (assuming you have the later intake that came on all LS1's 2001+). I don't think the intake/TB/heads are your problem if you can't get past 5500! Try dynoing with your air intake removed. Even if you're completely stock on an early LS ('98) you should be making power almost to 6000!

Modenas:
There's a pretty wide-open area under the header panel on the 951's. Don't forget that it's where the intercooler sits from the factory! It's designed to move a lot of air through there. The problem is the air intake size. Most LS guys run a 3.5"-4" intake, and the way mine is routed there's only room for a 3" with lots of curves (every bend cuts your airflow by some obscene amount).
