For the benefit of 944Hybrids users there are two search functions available for you to use.
The purpose of this sticky is to explain the "Advanced Search" function because it is much more powerful and is the best choice when researching information.

When you log on to the site a list of options is shown in a line at the top of the page. One option is labelled "Search", use this option (NOT the search box lower down on the right).

After you click on the upper search option, a drop down box appears. At the bottom of this box is a radio button marked "Advanced …

996 seats in an '83 944 Empty 996 seats in an '83 944

Post  RobotMachines Mon Oct 12, 2009 9:45 pm

I bought some fully powered plush leather 996 seats many years ago and am finally getting around to seeing if they'll work out.

I have the 944 passenger seat out and have found that the rail widths are basically the same which means modding the rail bolt areas to get them in won't be all that difficult. Powering the driver's side may be a little difficult; there are 20 more pin-outs.

Anyone put full power 911 seats in a 944?

Wiring diagram?
Rail mods?

I'll post what it takes as I figure it out. Any help would be appreciated though Very Happy

Hey James....
1. What year are they from?
2. What options do they have (lumbar, heating, etc)
3. Can you post a picture of the wires on the drivers seat ... the connector? Especially wire colors.

I think I can be of service if you can give me these. Very Happy

996 seats in an '83 944 Empty Power Seats in 944

I'm under the impression that 993-on seats are plug and play for the 968 and late 944's; early 944's, not sure.

Thanks guys; I'll post some pictures and wire colors tonight. The passenger seat I was able to power up but the driver's side. I think, has every option under the sun. I'll get the years they were made for as well.

996 seats in an '83 944 Empty Re: 996 seats in an '83 944

Post  944-LT1 Tue Oct 13, 2009 10:10 am

Nevermind. I found it. Been awhile since we visited this problem. Laughing

I have my passenger seat powered up... it was easier to figure, only about 12 connections.
The driver's side seat has a computer built on made by Lear... and actually, I think the seats are made by Lear. The computer has 4 large spade connections in 2 groups of 2. The group on the left has 3 little pins to the left of it. The group on the right has 6 little pins next to it, and there's a 20 to 24 pin computer connection in the middle.
Where my fingers are is where I think I need to apply power. I don't want to "F" this up. Does anyone have any idea where I can get schematics on this module??? I've browsed the net and so on. I even e-mailed Lear.
I think I only need to apply power to get them to work and the computer module is probably for position memory and so forth which I don't give a hoot about (no one drives this car but me )
The seats are full power and I think they even have heat (which I don't really care about... I'm always too hot). The driver's side has an extra 4-way switch so I think it has a complete lumbar system.
I bought a shop manual online that has the full electrical schematics for the 2001 Boxter, 911, and 911 Turbo (mostly in German but wiring is universal). It helped me figure out the passenger side which is quite easy... they don't list anything as high tech as the driver's side seat I have so I guess this computer module came out after 2001 (think the seats were made on Jan. 2003).
ANY ANY ANY help would be great... thanks.

Nice.

Those are some old pictures.

The first one is the driver's side (13 pins on the part where my two fingers are). The driver's side also has that connector in the second picture making way too many pins.
I have an idea that the connector in the second picture goes to the connector on the driver's side which you can't see. Then all I have to do is hook up the driver's side. I would assume all I have to do is power all of the large brown(neg) and red(positive) connectors. The rest of the pins probably go to a computer in the car for seat memory positions.

There is one strange circular seat adjuster on the driver's side that's not on the passenger side that you can see in the picture below.. wonder what it's for? I'll find out I guess when/if I power it up.

Thanks MK, that solves that and I appreciate it, but here's the problem; I don't know how to connect power... the computer it seems is mounted under the driver's seat and the pins have no color coding since they go right into the circuit board (I guess I need to read the board layout and guess which is ground and which is power): ... nice 26 pin connector in there as well that I didn't show in the picture and didn't see until I popped the bottom off...

Bending bits to be able to see, I can see the word "Lear" on the top of the module and this is what I found (still searching);

...Lear...Porsche...

Company;

EDIT: At least they seem like quality seats... have to figure out how to power it... Suspect

EDIT 2: seat flash link.. nice funky music... dig'n it!

EDIT 3: Music reminds me of the movie, "Snatch" (which if you haven't seen, see it!)

So hook up 12 (+) to terminals 1, 1 (smaller), and 2 (smaller) and 12V (-) ground to terminals 2 and 3 (smaller) and it should all work.

The 26 pin connector is for mirror memory and crap like that....which you CAN hook up if you want to but would need the memory switch too.

LE, HH, HV, and LV are all motors. Looking at my diagram, each of these have 5 terminals number [1,2][1,2,3]. The big guys are the pos. and neg. to each motor. The other smaller 3 terminals are for hall effect sensors in the motor to tell it when its maxed out either way.

Everything to the left of the 26 pin connector in my diagram is for lumbar support.

Plug number 5 (the 9 pin connector) is for the switches on the seat.
The blue plug (LV and HH) is for longitudinal and rear height adjustments.
The natural colored plug (LO and LU) is for lumbar adjustments.
The black plug (LE and HV) is for back rest angle and front height adjustments.

The plugs coming from the car (which you dont have) were plugs 6 and 7. Everything else should be there.

Heat for the seats is also easy to hook up. I see two red/white wires in a plug in one of your pictures so you must have heated seats there. All you need is a dual mode switch (hi/off/lo) for it which are about $30 bucks a piece. The control unit (relay) and heater elements should already be in the seats. The plug that you show a picture of is for the heat as well.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

You will need to buy the switch/s for either side and then just wire them up per the diagram and the heaters should work. They dont have to be porsche switches. They can be any dual mode switches. I personally LOVE heated seats especially when its winter and the engines taking too long to heat up damnit.

From some simple measurements, it seems that the rails are the same width apart from each other but the bolt holes are in different areas, and the 911/Boxster rails are also longer. The 911/Boxster rails also dip down in the front but since the 944 has raised areas where the rails bolt on, I don't think that will matter. There will be some drilling involved (and a slim chance of some welding) but it doesn't seem too hard.

I'll post pictures and information as I find out.

Are these seats that nice? How's the price?

Eventually i was planning on getting a nice set of race seats (since we don't have a back seat anyways, it doesn't really matter if i can't lean the seat forward)...are these in the same league?

I don't know what race seats are like. I found these on eekbay (many years ago) and went for it. With shipping it was over 1K for both... they're new. I removed the cover (for the first time in many years) to take a picture for you. You can see in the picture that they have nice body support and they are fully powered with heat (no lumbar on the passenger side though. Edit: There is a lumbar motor on the passneger side that is functionally hooked up but no switch for it... must research... hmm). They went in the Porsche 911 in and around the year 2003 and I would assume they are probably still using the same sort of seat now.

MK! You are a... ... an... the most... awesome person!

You read the schematic perfectly and the driver's side seat powered up!!!

Now it's a matter of time to rip out the old interior, install the new carpet and seats all wired up to go.
Nice schematic work my friend!

Test wiring mess that produced full motor function (used the screw driver to short the middle seat-power pin on and off):
